How to keep her busy after her spay

Hi everyone!

My little Maya, a 7-month-old Labrador cross who’s full of life, was spayed on Tuesday. The vet obviously told me that she’d need plenty of rest and to only go out for toilet breaks until her check-up this afternoon, and that after that I could start lead walks again for a week before getting back to long, off-lead walks so she can properly burn off some steam.

She’s bounced back really well from the op; even by the next day she was ready to tear around everywhere, running all over the house... She’s got so much energy so it’s really hard to keep her calm! She can’t stand being cooped up all day. I’m trying to play with her gently, but she’s used to a half-hour walk on the lead in the morning and an hour in the fields in the late afternoon to run it off, and now she’s only allowed out for quick toilet breaks in the garden...

Do you have any advice on how to tire her out a bit more—calmly, of course—while we wait to get back to our long walks?

It breaks my heart seeing her just sat by the door hoping we’re going for a walk... She’s a proper bundle of energy too; she can’t sit still if she doesn’t have her daily walks and she shows her frustration by getting into mischief...

To make matters worse, my downstairs neighbour isn’t helping the situation at all; she can’t stand hearing her running around the house, so I’ve moved into my mum’s for a few days.

If you have any ways or techniques to help her burn off all that excess energy, I’m all ears! 😁

    Hi everyone!

We’ve been able to start going for walks again over the last few days, which is such a relief for Maya!

The vet told me I could let her off the lead for a few minutes during our walks, and she’s been charging about like a mad thing!

However, she still seems quite wound up! I think it’s because of the dressing. Sometimes she growls at herself and rubs against anything she can find (furniture edges, corners of walls, etc.) – the poor thing is clearly fed up with her bandage!

Last night I walked her for an hour and a half, on top of her 30-minute morning walk (as well as some training and play sessions). I let her off the lead for a bit so she could run as much as she wanted, thinking it would tire her out and stop her growling at herself, but it didn't work at all!

She was bursting with energy and just getting frustrated with herself...

She’s got an appointment on Monday afternoon to FINALLY get the dressing off! Does anyone have any advice or tips to help keep her calm until Monday?

I feel so helpless, like there’s nothing I can do for the poor girl...

Thanks for your reply. She definitely isn't short on cuddles 😋 I chose this time for her surgery specifically because I’m more available to be with her. Toy-wise, she’s already got a Kong she loves as well as a sort of treat dispenser, plus plenty of other squeaky ones. She has long ones she can shake about, some filled with a kind of crinkly plastic (Kong brand, actually), and others specifically for chewing. As for bones, they don’t last long at the moment even though I buy her quite sturdy ones. She normally has loads of energy and I manage to wear her out with training sessions at home and games, but especially walks – and I think that’s what she’s missing the most right now. The poor thing is just pacing around the house, looking all depressed in front of the patio doors...

    Hi Maroune,

Recovery after a dog has surgery can sometimes be a long process, and finding quiet ways to keep them busy can be a bit of a challenge. Here are a few ideas to help keep your dog occupied as much as possible during this time.

First of all, you can give her more attention than you did before her op—lots of cuddles and staying close to her, while making sure she remains calm and settled.

Certain toys are great for beating boredom; for instance, you can get "KONG" style toys from most pet shops. You stuff these with food (crushed dry food mixed with water then frozen inside, special dog biscuits, wet food, etc.) and your dog will have to work really hard to get the food out.

Similarly, there are "Pipolinos", which are dispenser toys with holes in them. You put your dog's daily ration inside and they have to roll it around to get the dry food to fall out. You could also look at various types of chew bones, which are just as good for keeping a dog busy.

There are plenty of other ideas available online if the ones I’ve mentioned don't quite work for you.

    I hope this helps.
