Hi everyone,

I’ve recently noticed that my 4-year-old dog has these fuzzy, hairy-looking paw pads; see the photo below:

Does this look familiar to anyone?

Thanks

Hi, yeah, my dog has that too but it doesn’t look like that on him. His looks normal, like it’s just the paw pad, but the edges had started peeling off on their own. The RSPCA vet trimmed it and I’ve been doing it myself ever since.

My dog has the same thing. Did the vet say if it could be serious or not? If anyone else knows anything, I'd really appreciate your replies, thanks.

Thanks for your reply. It’s tempting to cut it, but I’m going to wait until I see the vet! Have a good evening.

Don’t touch it until you’ve seen your vet. If it seems to be bothering him or you’re worried he might hurt himself, you can protect it with a small sock for walks (or a dog boot if you have one). In any case, you need to see the vet for hyperkeratosis.

Hi, my dog is also showing signs of hyperkeratosis but with a growth that looks like a claw.

It feels just like the paw pad to the touch.

My question is: can we do anything else besides applying the protective lotion?

Is it possible to trim this growth without hurting him?

I'm worried that the growth might have a blood supply and bleed heavily!

I’ve got an appointment with the vet but I wanted to get your take on it first.

My dog is a 9-year-old beagle.

Good news. It’s nothing serious! Well, you learn something new every day! I’d never seen anything like it! 😉

Don't regret your trip to the vet. Hyperkeratosis can be a symptom of certain serious illnesses, so it was definitely necessary to have a vet take a look.

Well, as long as it's nothing serious, that's the main thing 😉

Hi everyone, I’ve just got back from the vet and it is indeed hyperkeratosis (well spotted to whoever guessed that). According to the vet, it’s nothing serious; he says it’s often hereditary and common in dogs with red coats. It’s almost cleared up on its own since my first post. If it comes back, the vet will prescribe a lotion. Have a good evening!
