German Shepherd x Malinois

Hi everyone, I’d like to get your thoughts on a Malinois x German Shepherd cross. I'm planning on buying a puppy from this mix, but I was wondering if it might be a bit too high-octane? Just so you know, I have a fair bit of experience with dogs as I've lived with a Rottweiler and a Pointer since I was born :) I’m very active, so I plan to get my dog into sports; since Malinois are quite high-energy, I reckon they’d be able to keep up with me on runs, do some agility, and so on... But on the flip side, I’d be away for 6 hours during the day..

Thanks

Thanks anyway, I’m definitely planning to see a dog trainer to make sure I have a happy, well-adjusted pup :) Since he’ll be a puppy, I’m going to book some time off; I’ve got three weeks of annual leave I can take, and then I can sort out some flexible working hours after that. I might be able to pop home to walk him, but it would only be a 20 or 25-minute stroll... Or perhaps I should look into getting a dog walker? As for the breeds, I really love both the temperament and the look of the GSD. Regarding the parents, it’s a friend of mine whose dog had an accidental litter with the neighbour’s dog... They’re both very healthy and have a sound temperament, and I’ve double-checked that the dad doesn't have any issues with hip dysplasia.

He could take after the GSD just as much as the Malinois, or be a 50/50 split but with the GSD's best traits and the Malinois' flaws, or the other way around... if you’re just as keen on a Malinois as a GSD, why not consider a cross between the two and see how it turns out. But if you like the Malinois more than the GSD, it might be worth looking into the breed you actually prefer and that suits you best.

Six hours is a long time, but in my opinion, that's the absolute limit; any longer than that and you shouldn't get such an athletic dog.

However, that's definitely too long for a puppy; you'll need to find a solution so they can get a break and a walk in between.

As for where you get your puppy from, be careful that the parents aren't being overbred and make sure the breeder is properly licensed with their local council.

If you're familiar with these breeds and have a good feel for them, then why not...

That said, to properly settle a puppy in, you really need to be around as much as possible.

And as for the crossbreed, you especially need to be aware of just how alert these types of dogs are and what that entails for their training, otherwise you might end up feeling a bit out of your depth.
