Hello everyone,

I have an 18-month-old Australian Shepherd. Since he was a puppy, he’s had behavioural issues. At first, I thought the signs of aggression he was showing were down to dominance, but over time, I quickly realised my dog was reactive due to severe anxiety. He’s scared of everything: strangers, new situations, and he especially hates being handled. For instance, at the vet's, it’s a nightmare; he growls, and if it wasn’t for the muzzle, I dread to think what would happen... It’s the same when I try to clip his nails or bathe him; in fact, I’ve never actually managed it. I’m seeing a behaviourist, but positive reinforcement and desensitisation haven’t worked so far. Yet, with family and friends, he’s a sweetheart... very obedient and affectionate. At the dog park, he’s lovely and very social with other dogs.

Recently, my behaviourist and my vet told me that my dog has anxiety-based phobias. Basically, he gets so terrified that he can’t cope and might bite in those situations... So they’ve suggested fluoxetine, followed by behavioural therapy. What do you think? I’d love to hear about your experiences to reassure me before I go ahead with this. I’ll do everything I can to make sure my dog has a happy, healthy life.

Thanks!

Hi there, Fluoxetine (or Reconcile) is useful for cases of irritability, anger, aggression, hyperactivity, and hyper-reactivity; it can help reduce these signs by 30% within a week. However, for fears, phobias, panic attacks, and anxiety, sertraline (such as Zoloft) is used for the same results. Treatment should be short-term. These medications will help to calm your dog down so that they are more receptive to behavioural therapy.
