First season and incontinence in my dog

Hi everyone,

Since the start of the week, Fergie has been in her first season.

It’s been quite an emotional milestone for the whole family; at 10 months old, our baby is finally becoming a lady.

The excitement quickly turned into constant mopping up, though. On top of the spotting, Fergie just can't seem to hold it in anymore: I’ve found several pee puddles around the house and, to make matters worse, a couple of poos to go with them.

We’re not really sure what to do.

We think it might be due to her vulva swelling or perhaps an infection, because when we take her out, she does wees that last for ages (no exaggeration, 20 to 30 seconds). Or she’ll do lots of little ones.

I was wondering if anyone else has ever had this kind of issue, as we’re really hoping it isn't going to last.

Thanks in advance!

I've got a Chihuahua who started her first season two weeks ago, but for a week now she's been having accidents and weeing without any control. She doesn't seem to be in any pain though, so I'm not really sure what to do.

Just a heads up, my Comète’s first season was accompanied by cystitis... and that's an infection, so it means a trip to the vet...

My Pyrenean cross is called Belle. Her seasons actually came to a halt when her sister passed away, but she's back in season now and she’s peeing everywhere. I just hope there’s nothing more to it.

So sorry to hear about Fergie. I hadn't thought of cystitis (I didn't know anything about it as my two girls have never had it). Give Fergie a stroke from me.

    Good call taking her in.

(It certainly looked like it anyway)

A few days of treatment and it’ll be all sorted ;)

We finally took her to the vet. She does indeed have cystitis. Luckily we managed to get her seen quite quickly. So, it's antibiotics and anti-inflammatories for the little lady. She's been sleeping... a bit more than usual since then.

    Thanks for all your advice.

Being in season lasts for three weeks. During this time, she won't really know what she wants and she'll be needing a wee every 30 seconds. Once she's out of season, her behaviour will go back to normal. In the meantime, you've just got to bear with her and take her out regularly to do her business.
