Dog's nails turning white

Hi everyone,

Since he was a tiny puppy, my Yorkie has had two white claws on one of his back paws, while all the others were solid black. However, recently, some of his front nails have started turning white, and it's now spreading to other claws on his back paws as well. Even the fur around those claws has gone white.

My dog is coming up to 5 years old, and I should mention he's black and tan, not silver.

Is this normal? (By "normal", I mean is it nothing to worry about? Because it’s definitely a bit strange!)

I've owned many dogs over the years and I've never seen this happen before. If anyone else has been through this, I'd love to hear your experiences.

Hi everyone, I’m looking for some advice. I’ve got a similar question to @Katchina, except my pups are only a month old and their claws are turning white—well, one of them in particular. I was wondering if it could be down to a calcium deficiency, for example? Thanks for your help. Speak soon :)

    There we go :)

That’s brilliant then, nothing to worry about.

Thanks, I’ve just got back from the vet and yes, it's confirmed – it’s nothing to worry about at all. It’s just like with us; as we get older, we get grey hair, and for them, sometimes it’s their claws!!

I don't think it's anything to worry about, I’d say it’s more likely just wear and tear... but I'm no expert so I wouldn't want to give you the wrong advice. A quick ring to your vet and I’m sure they’ll put your mind at rest.
