Did cortisone kill my dog?

My 10-year-old dog passed away last night. Two weeks ago, he was treated for a severe ear infection; the vet prescribed Dermipred 20 (one tablet morning and night for five days, then half a tablet morning and night for 10 days). On the very evening the treatment finished, Wednesday 24th October, he started panting and couldn't put any weight on his front left leg. We took him to the vet on Thursday 25th October. He was diagnosed with muscle weakness in his leg. The vet put him on a drip, supposedly to help with the pain. On the Friday, he decided to do an X-ray. We went in to see him and, to our shock, he couldn't stand on his legs at all and started urinating on himself. We left him there for the X-ray, but an hour later the vet called to tell us he had died. Granted, he was old and had arthritis, but today we're wondering if the Dermipred was responsible for his health deteriorating so quickly and ultimately for his death.

Hi Mjdino, Sorry I didn't have time to post a quick note yesterday, but I was thinking of you and Enicia. I'm writing this while watching a green woodpecker that’s just reappeared in the garden, practically right under my nose (the garden isn't huge, barely 7,000 square feet in total). How are you holding up?? Are you managing to get through the worst of it, with and thanks to Tino? I miss my little girl so much; I keep getting these sudden waves of missing her, but I suppose that’s just part of life and the grieving process. It’s like the people I see in my job who have to carry on after losing a partner they've spent most of their lives with; they are often so brave!! They even have to put up with their children’s squabbles, which is unfortunately quite a common thing. Speak soon. 🙂

He looks absolutely worn out there, the little 'blue' boy – you can tell he’s had a brilliant time!! That’s wonderful! Try and get a photo that's a bit less blurry next time though – can you see his ribs a bit or is it just an optical illusion? How long had he been at the rescue for? I’m starting to have a look around myself too, but I’m always drawn to exactly the kind of dog I shouldn't have: an escape artist, a hunter, a bit of a barker, a bit stubborn and a total drama queen........ 👎

Hi Mjdino I really feel for you after losing your companion Dino. You’ll never forget him, I’m sure of it—just like all of us who have lost a pet. You definitely find yourself thinking about them even more at this time of year! It’s lovely that you’ve adopted a new little one, and I hope they really enjoy their new life. I also adopted a little lad called Billy from a rescue centre two months ago. He settled in in record time. It’s such a brilliant thing to give a second chance to a poor little soul.

And here is our newest addition – his name is Tino. I know it’s not very original, but this way we feel like Dino is still with us a little bit. What a lovely idea to have this tribute to our beloved pets on All Saints' Day; thank you @enicia, it’s very moving. The grief will always be there, and perhaps it will fade over time, but our dogs will always stay in our hearts. Getting back to Tino, I think he’s already settling into his new home; he has a garden to run around in and we went for our first long walk this morning. Right now, he’s sleeping like a log. I was actually quite apprehensive when I went to collect him yesterday as I wasn’t sure if I was ready, but one thing is for certain: Tino needs so much affection and so many cuddles that you can’t help but melt. I hope both you, @enicia and @bille de verre, also find the joy of a new four-legged companion one day. Sending hugs to you both and I hope to keep hearing from you.

That was such a lovely, heartfelt message and video, full of kindness and love; everyone here was very moved and joins me in thanking you, Enicia.

You weren’t with your Snoopy for very long – three years is such a short time – but you should take comfort in knowing he had the best years of his life with you. He finally got to experience all the things he’d been missing, all thanks to you. 🙂

Hi there, I’m so happy for this pup; I’m sure he’ll be very happy and will bring you some comfort during these tough times. As you know, I sadly lost my own dog last month too – an old boy I’d only adopted three years ago – and today, as it’s All Saints' Day, I wanted to pay tribute to all those departed dogs we loved so much by making a slideshow. I took the liberty of including the photo of your lovely Dino that you posted here to pay tribute to him too, as well as pretty Siska; I hope you don't mind. I’ve posted the video in the thread where I shared a lot when my own dog passed away. If you’d like to see it, you can click on the topic "Snoopy isn't doing well at all" and you'll find the video on the last page. Anyway, I wish you a lot of courage and strength for the coming weeks, and much happiness with your new companion. Enicia

Hi Bille de verre, your messages are doing me the world of good, you’ve no idea how much. Anyway, I thought I’d give you an update after our visit to the local rescue centre in Saintes: well, we’ve gone and fallen for a lovely one-year-old Labrador. Honestly, seeing all those poor souls locked away like that is heartbreaking. He’s certainly a big change from our old boy, though; he’s very lively! But that doesn’t mean I’m forgetting my Dino. When you’re ready, I really think you should get another one—you shouldn’t be left alone with only sad thoughts for company.

    Good evening,

I’m so glad to see you’re feeling better and that you’ve brought some joy to a pooch who really needed it.

I’ve also reached a bit of a turning point since last night, and I can finally smile again when I think of my Siska. Don’t worry, I don’t live alone and I have a very full life, but these last seven days have been devastating—which is only natural. I’m still blaming myself for not spending enough time with my little girl over the last few weeks because I was so busy, even if I did keep her right by my side towards the end. Never mind the accidents; I constantly had a mop in my hand... not to mention having to wash her bedding all the time, and her as well.

I have too much work and too many commitments outside of work at the moment to properly welcome a new little companion, and I don’t feel ready for it just yet anyway, even if I can’t imagine life without a lively four-legged friend in the house.

Have you brought him home yet? Is he busy sniffing every inch of his new territory? Is he already giving you a big welcome? At a year old, I think he’ll soon move on from his past troubles. Will you send us some photos? What are you going to call the little Lab?

    🙂
