Caring for a torn claw wound

Hi everyone, if anyone here has experience looking after a dog with a torn claw, I’d really appreciate your advice! My three-month-old pup has just torn one of her claws (front paw, though luckily not one of the weight-bearing ones). We took her to the vet, who removed the part that had come loose (it was hanging off anyway). Following the vet's orders, she's now on antibiotics and we're cleaning the area twice a day with Betadine. Everything seemed fine for the first two days after the appointment, but then today the wound started bleeding again. The vet did mention a slight infection. Do you think I should be cleaning it with Betadine more often during the day? We live in a house and she’s in and out of the garden quite a bit. Any other tips for dealing with this kind of injury? The vet wasn't alarmed at all and said we could still go for walks (as long as we stick to the pavement, of course), but I’m worried the infection might get worse.

Hi everyone! Just in case anyone is still checking this thread, I wanted to give you an update on how the injury is getting on! It healed up quite quickly and the claw has already started growing back. It’s still a long way from looking like the others, but luckily it’s growing back properly, so it shouldn't cause any discomfort further down the line :) Thanks again for all your advice and kind words!

Honey is brilliant for healing! It’s like magic, and edible too, just in case your dog decides to have a little lick 🙂 In our house, when there’s a sore paw, we leave it open to the air at home and pop a sock on for walkies. My dog ripped a claw out once, and it grew back veeeery slowly. After several years, only a tiny little "stump" had grown back, but it didn’t bother her one bit.

You can dab some honey into the wound; it’s a brilliant antiseptic and really helps speed up the healing process.

When you’re disinfecting it, the best thing to do is put your solution in a clean container and let the paw soak for a few minutes. Otherwise, you’ll never get the stuff everywhere it needs to go, which is where the risk of infection comes in.

When you’re protecting the paw for walks, make sure the "sock" comes up nice and high. If it ends below the joint, they’re likely to just pull it off.

    Brilliant, thanks so much!

Now I just need to find a baby sock for him; that should definitely come in handy during his mad moments, haha

You can disinfect it as much as you like.

Give it a good rinse, pat it dry with some kitchen roll and make sure to get the Betadine right into the gap.

One of mine actually snapped a back claw right down to the quick back in September. He spent several months without a claw and without any discomfort, and it’s only just starting to grow back now...

Alternatively, you could put a little sock on her (a baby sock works well) and secure it above the paw with some medical tape. It’ll stop any muck getting in, but you shouldn't leave it on all the time as it can slow down the healing process; make sure to disinfect it before and after she wears it. This could be a good solution for the times of day when she’s most active.

Obviously, no swimming at all until it’s fully healed 😉
