"Bump" after a tick

Hi everyone,

I posted before because my dog had a tick and I was looking for a natural remedy, but unfortunately he's caught a second one. Since I'm not that clued up on natural treatments yet, I’m taking him to the vet on the 9th of May for his boosters and I'll buy another tick tablet. How many days should I wait after the jab before giving him the tablet?

Regarding the tick, I found it late last night and as I didn't have a tool to remove it, I had a quick look online and just pulled it off with my fingers. I think the head came out, but a little red bump with some dried blood has formed (photo at the end of the post). He didn't have this with the first tick, so I'm a bit worried.

Also, any tips on how to spot a tick quickly after it’s bitten? He has a very thick coat and even though I check him over after every walk, I still missed it.

Thanks in advance! ☺

MarieGame, I had to pull the tick off with my fingers; it was midnight and I’m at my dad’s place, and he doesn’t have any tweezers. I’ve got a tick removal tool, but it’s at my mum’s. I didn’t have any other choice. Regarding the vet, I’ll obviously ask about it during the appointment. I really trust this vet, but she’s only in town one day a week; the rest of the time it’s another vet I’m not as keen on. I was asking because I have to wait until the 9th of May to go to the vet (money is a bit tight – my rabbit has an eye ulcer which I’m treating, of course, but I haven't got enough to go to the vet before the 9th) and I just can't get there before then.

Even so, I’m worried and I’d like to give him a tablet soon, so I think I’ll give the vet a ring for some advice and I’ll try to sort something out.

Anyway, thanks everyone for your replies – a forum is for sharing opinions and advice while being respectful of one another, of course.

@Arabesquee, stop fantasising about alternative remedies. Steve Jobs died because of that, whereas he might still be with us today if he’d stuck to conventional medicine. You don’t remove a tick with your fingers; you use a tick remover or tweezers. Either way, you need to rotate it anti-clockwise to make sure you get the head out. Then, give the area a good disinfect. Assuming your manual attempt actually worked, that little bump is nothing to worry about. By doing it the way you did, the tick likely caused a local reaction, but it’s certainly nothing serious. At worst, your dog will just have a little scar. As for the rest, you need to ask your vet these questions. This forum won't give you better answers regarding how long to wait before giving meds after a vaccination, etc. I’m being a bit blunt because you don’t seem to be relying on your vet for basic care. If you don’t trust them, find a new one. But don’t turn to the internet for these kinds of decisions that should be based on standard veterinary advice.

That looks perfectly normal. Just dab on a bit of antiseptic twice a day. You can give her the tablet right away; it takes about six hours to take effect, and if a tick bites her, it’ll die within an hour. Ticks usually have to be attached for around 24 hours to transmit any diseases, so once she’s had the tablet, there’s no need to worry on that front!

Did you make sure to disinfect it properly? Now it’s just a matter of waiting to see how it develops. Hang in there!
