Boubou has eaten sanitary towels...

Hi everyone!

I'm back on the forum to share today's disaster.

The title says it all: my little monster has eaten a sanitary towel, plastic wrapper and all.

As soon as I realised, I called the vet. We've got an appointment in 2 hours for an examination and an ultrasound.

Given the size of the thing compared to my girl, and what it's made of, the vet surgery doesn't recommend waiting for it to pass like other small items might, and they want to examine her before advising on what to do.

So here I am, worried sick, just waiting for the appointment time to roll around. It happened during the night, so it's too late to induce vomiting. I'm not really sure what's going to happen next.

As for how on earth she got her paws on the pad, let's just say my sister will definitely be sleeping out on the porch tonight.

I'd be grateful for any info on pets swallowing similar objects, especially if you've got any reassuring stories!

Keep us posted, and you’ll have to explain to Minnie that it doesn’t go in that end ^^😔 I’ll see myself out

    Oh dear...

Get to the vet straight away, if only for the peace of mind of being there.

Thinking of you, and keep us posted...

Hurry up, love! You'll panic less once you're there! The vet will see you sooner if he sees she's really poorly!

Minnie was full of beans this morning, but she’s really not right now. She’s got a runny nose (to be honest, I’m seeing everything as a red flag at the moment).

I think I’m going to take her to the vet’s right now; I can’t stand the waiting anymore, and she’s gone from being full of life to a poorly little dog far too quickly. I’ll keep you updated as soon as I know more!

Thanks for your messages, they’re stopping me from having a complete meltdown! :)

Oh dear; and there I was thinking she’d managed to soak it all up before it came out! Sorry, I know it’s not really funny—I was just trying to lighten the mood a bit while you’re waiting for the vet appointment... 😳 Best of luck! Let us know how she gets on.

Definitely, we'll do whatever it takes! It goes without saying.

Poor thing has just had a massive bout of diarrhoea all over the flat in the time it took me to go and make a cup of tea. :/

Oh my goodness, I can only imagine—I’d be in a right state too. Swallowing all that, plastic and all... (was it vanilla-scented? ;-))

Thank goodness you acted so quickly, keep us posted

Jim, my daughter’s Lab, had to have an operation for the same thing when he was only three months old. Just eight days after she brought him home! It meant eight days of care with trips to the vet every single day. It cost about £850, but luckily he’s had no lasting issues! The scan will tell you everything and anyway love, you haven’t really got a choice!

I can't find anything more than a few tiny scraps of the pad (a proper thick sanitary towel, not a liner, unfortunately). Since we live in a tiny 30 sq m flat with no furniture, I'm thinking she couldn't have hidden the rest anywhere but in her tummy...

Since her favourite hobby is shredding and then eating things she shouldn't, it doesn’t really surprise me that she’s managed to eat the whole thing, bit by bit.

The vet also mentioned that it’s going to swell up (so between that and the amount she’s swallowed, she won't be able to pass it on her own). I was already panicking about her swallowing a foreign object, but that really was the final straw!

I hope that if she does need surgery, she can come home tonight so I can look after her myself.

Another hour and a half to go; it feels like three days have passed since I called the vet at 8am.
