Boubou has eaten sanitary towels...

Hi everyone!

I'm back on the forum to share today's disaster.

The title says it all: my little monster has eaten a sanitary towel, plastic wrapper and all.

As soon as I realised, I called the vet. We've got an appointment in 2 hours for an examination and an ultrasound.

Given the size of the thing compared to my girl, and what it's made of, the vet surgery doesn't recommend waiting for it to pass like other small items might, and they want to examine her before advising on what to do.

So here I am, worried sick, just waiting for the appointment time to roll around. It happened during the night, so it's too late to induce vomiting. I'm not really sure what's going to happen next.

As for how on earth she got her paws on the pad, let's just say my sister will definitely be sleeping out on the porch tonight.

I'd be grateful for any info on pets swallowing similar objects, especially if you've got any reassuring stories!

Yes, you're right Docline, she really wasn't thinking straight! The wait feels like forever, especially since even if the laxative is giving her some relief and getting her bowels moving again, I’m not finding any bits in her poo. We’re seeing the ultrasound specialist and the surgeon this evening to decide on the next steps (I don't think it’s going to pass on its own). To be honest, I can't see any other way out than an operation...

This thing is taking ages to clear! I really hope for her sake and yours that it comes loose, but if she still hasn't passed it in five days, you're going to have to get it seen to! Your Minnie can't stay like that any longer! Love, Titys!

Blimey. She definitely wasn't thinking straight that day. Do you add a bit of oil to the chicken? I hope you’re still giving her little massages to help relax the area; it can only do her good. And no hurting your back again in solidarity with your little greedy guts!

We’ve just got back from the vet: the ultrasound and physical exam show that she’s still got something blocking her little tummy.

So, we’re starting another five-day course of laxatives and probiotics. If there’s no improvement within five days, we’ll do another check-up with the ultrasound specialist.

No fever, and she’s doing very well in herself overall.

She has still lost nearly a pound (about 0.9 lbs) in a fortnight, so I’m going to stop the chicken diet and give her something a bit fattier to help build her back up.

Regarding the repeated accidents she’s had today, the vet thinks that because she's so constipated, her lower belly is completely backed up. Between that and the fatigue, the vet isn't surprised she's having these little accidents.

We’ll have to see how things go!

Cheers Doudou for the link, I’ve actually seen that one before! ;) Mind you, food intolerance makes sense! To be fair, I’m not sure many would be able to digest a towel! ;)

Found a handy little link that might help.

    http://barf-raw-feeding.fr/les-crottes-et-leur-couleur/

It’s aimed at raw-fed dogs, but some of these can also happen with dogs on other diets too...

As for work, it’s not going to be easy, I must admit! But it makes up for the crazy hours I’ve been putting in lately! ;)

Thanks for the info @Energie, that sounds spot on!

Especially since we’ve been for a wander in the woods in the meantime, and she’s got a habit of scavenging for rubbish behind my back, so she’s probably made matters even worse!

If Sana’s issue is sorted, all the better! If a bit of medication can give her some relief, let’s go for it!

We’ll see what the vet says. :)

I'm really sorry it's taking so long for things to get back to normal.

You know, if the stomach was irritated by the object and they've developed gastritis because of it, it’s fairly normal for it to take a while to clear up and for their poo to be a bit up and down for a bit.

I suspected Sana had gastritis for a while. When the vet prescribed an anti-inflammatory for her leg, believe it or not, it seemed to sort out the gastritis too. Her poo has been perfect for about 2 months now.

Anyway, my point is that her stools were yellowish, but a natural yellow, a bit like the colour of dry food, like undigested food. I could actually see bits of food in it.

I forgot to mention it to the vet the last time we went. I'd like to confirm if an anti-inflammatory is the standard treatment for gastritis. It might have been a coincidence, but the effect was almost instant, like 2 or 3 days (basically the time it takes for the meds to kick in).

    Hang in there.
