BITTEN ON THE SNOUT

Hi everyone,

While out for a walk, I passed a house guarded by dogs.

Except my dog had the "brilliant" idea of sticking his snout through a hole in the fence.

He was immediately bitten on the muzzle by the dog guarding its home.

I don't know what to do to treat this bite, so if you have any tips, please share them.

What's more, my dog hasn't really seemed himself since. He's barely eating and his nose feels hot. He really seems out of sorts. I think it might be due to the shock? Am I right?

Thanks in advance for any replies. :)

You can use Betadine to disinfect it or some hydrogen peroxide on a sterile gauze pad, along with an antibiotic and steroid cream which you can get from the vet. However, depending on the wound, you’re better off seeing the vet—it’s much safer. Let us know how you get on!

Usually, as a precaution, vets will muzzle a dog that might be aggressive. You just need to let them know.

    Okay, thank you so much!

I’ll see how he gets through the night and if he’s no better tomorrow, it’s straight to the vet...

The trouble is, it’s an absolute nightmare taking him there because he was so poorly in the past. He spent a week hospitalised because of a virus. It was touch and go for a while. And since then, it’s been impossible for the vets to get anywhere near him...

I’d suggest using yellow or green Betadine diluted in water for disinfecting! Someone else might have better advice, though. There are three different types of Betadine, including the red one, but they’re all used differently (make sure you check the leaflet).

And yes, he's fully up to date with all his vaccinations.

It doesn't look infected... It's still bleeding a little bit, but only very slightly.

What could I use to disinfect it?

First of all, you should disinfect it and check if there’s a bite on the inside. Sometimes a dog won't have a visible wound on the outside of the lip, but they might still need stitches on the inside. Keep a close eye on it to make sure it doesn't swell up!

If I were you, I’d take him to the vet. Is he up to date with all his vaccinations?

Does it look infected? Could we see a photo as well, and if it carries on, I'd recommend taking them to the vet.
