Whenever I see kids like that, I can't help but think of Veruca Salt in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory: "Daddy, I WANT a squirrel!"
Ticrabe, you're 12 years old; you've got better things to do than having a dog all to yourself. Besides, you won't even be able to take it for walks because you're a minor, and that's illegal if the dog is a restricted breed. Stop being so bratty; once you're grown up AND mature, then you can have your own dog. A dog isn't a soft toy, and it’s not all sunshine and rainbows.
Hi there, first of all, let me just say that for an adult you've got no respect whatsoever. If you’re judging someone’s upbringing based on a single comment, then that’s just pathetic. Also, you must surely realise that if the person is 12, they’re living with their parents and are just looking for advice. Anyway, this was posted back in 2017, so they’ve obviously grown up since then.
Hi there,
Unfortunately, as an American Staffy cross, this dog would be classed as a "Category 1" restricted breed (unless its physical build is judged to be different enough during an official assessment to be de-categorised, but since it’s crossed with a morphologically similar breed, I wouldn't hold out much hope). It is actually illegal to sell them or even give them away for free. You also need a specific ownership permit and a certificate of competence to keep the dog. They must be neutered and registered with the local council. Like I mentioned before, you have to be over 18, so your parents would need to handle all these legal requirements.
It really comes down to whether your parents are happy to take on all those responsibilities. Given all these regulations, I’d really encourage you to look at another breed. Especially since you’re under 18, it’s even more important to make sure the whole family is 100% committed and that you look into positive reinforcement training to help the dog learn the ropes. You’ll also need to be ready for plenty of walks, which is a lot of work when a pup isn't house-trained yet.
Best regards,
Julie
Right, I think I phrased my question badly. I was asking if you can take this kind of dog for a walk at that age.
Well, just looking at what you’re saying, it speaks volumes about your maturity and, therefore, your ability to train a dog.
I’m not here to judge you personally, but rather the decision you’re planning to make.
I assume if you’ve posted a question on this forum, it’s because you actually want answers. Most of the key points have already been mentioned (the law, health, and your ability to look after a dog). If we’re against it, it’s for valid reasons. Whether you like it or not, a restricted breed cannot be walked by a minor—meaning your dog would only ever be able to go out with your parents—and it could never be let off-lead (what a life!). Please, think about the dog. Your outlook is very selfish. When you love dogs (and a specific breed in your case), you have to respect them, which you aren’t doing. Respecting the breed means waiting until you’re an adult and are ready to take a dog on, so you can offer it the best life possible.
To choose a dog that’s right for you, you first need to consider your lifestyle and then look for a breed that fits in with it. Of course, every dog is an individual even within a breed, but it gives you a good starting point.
And while I'm at it, just one last question – since it’s sparked quite a debate, I’d like to know how to go about choosing a dog that’s right for me??
