Serbian Dobermanns

Hi everyone

I’m thinking of getting a Dobermann from a breeder in Serbia. I would have preferred to find one here in the UK, but I really want him to have that classic Dobermann look... so I’m leaning towards Serbia instead.

Has anyone ever imported a pup from there before? Does anyone have a recommendation or a specific breeder’s details?

Cheers!

The one we’ve got is "Black Cartel" (not sure if I’m allowed to post names on the forum?!)

Has anyone ever heard of them?

We’ve found one that imports to France, but we’d like to take our time to properly compare breeders and the puppies they have available.

Would you mind sharing the name of your breeder?

    Hi there,

We’re also looking to buy a Dobermann from Serbia for the same reasons. (We’re not trying to start a debate about cropped ears; to each their own.)

Have you found a reputable breeder yet?

Regarding importing to the UK, I’ve read that rabies is a major concern in those countries. Do you know if the dog will have to go into quarantine when arriving in the UK?

We’re planning to book an appointment with our vet to be sure about the import rules.

    Thanks

It’s clear that in terms of size, we’re talking about some serious units here—big-boned dogs, so you’ve got to keep a very close eye on them while they’re growing. No strenuous exercise and top-notch food are a must. As for their temperament... if they're from a good breeder, they’re absolute softies. Truly lovely dogs—stable, affectionate, and unfazed—a far cry from the stereotypes people try to pin on Eastern European Dobermanns. They easily give the top French bloodlines a run for their money, and those breeders often use dogs from these Eastern lines anyway. On the health side, my previous dog sadly passed away from DCM at just 3 years old... So, regardless of the breeder, bloodlines are important, but heart screening is a total non-negotiable priority. DCM usually shows up after 4 or 5 years, and by that age, many dogs have already been bred. You really need to check the existing offspring... even if it takes months of research.

Have a look at 'del Nasi' in Slovenia. The transport from Slovenia to Spain and then on to Morocco went smoothly. I’d avoid anything with too much 'Sidor of Pride of Russia' in the lines, though, as there seem to be some heart issues. Finally, be prepared for some massive dogs: they're closer to 110-120 lbs (about 8 stone) than the usual 75-100 lbs. Personally, I'm not a big fan.

I’m with Be Cool on this one, the Serbians are really leading the way with Dobermans at the moment.

The only trouble is, just like anywhere else, you’ve got good and bad breeders, not to mention the puppy farms...

Get in touch with the kennels yourself, ask for health tests, the parents' pedigree, etc. Stand your ground and don’t try to cut corners on the price; a quality Doberman is expensive, and that’s without even factoring in the import paperwork...

One lead that might be worth looking into is Di Alto Bello... I hope I’m not breaking any forum rules by mentioning them.

Eastern Europe produces some really lovely dogs.

However, as well as the health checks, make sure you focus on the socialisation side of things, especially since your puppy will be staying there for four months.

Ah, I see! ^^ Personally, I prefer them natural—ears and tail—but you shouldn't just focus on a dog's looks; their temperament matters too. There are dogs that you might not find particularly attractive, but they’ll suit your lifestyle far better than a 'pretty' one. I don't know any Serbian breeders myself, but do check that the parents have been health-tested (mainly for heart issues with this breed) and all the usual bits. Make sure you go with a reputable breeder.

Oh, I wasn't giving my opinion on the matter, I was just checking if that's actually what we're talking about.

LOL I knew I’d get that response eventually... Let’s just say, without wishing to offend anyone, I think Dobermanns look much better with cropped ears... it’s illegal in France... and I don’t think they have quite the same appeal anymore...
