Serbian Dobermanns

Hi everyone

I’m thinking of getting a Dobermann from a breeder in Serbia. I would have preferred to find one here in the UK, but I really want him to have that classic Dobermann look... so I’m leaning towards Serbia instead.

Has anyone ever imported a pup from there before? Does anyone have a recommendation or a specific breeder’s details?

Cheers!

No diamonds on the collar – just the price of a puppy at a puppy show – it's the old game of supply and demand 😠 – For some people, the dog world is just a goose that lays golden eggs

Spot on, and plenty of people don't think twice about taking dishonest advantage... 😔

@Lacurieuse, you're right, I'm sure prices have shot up over the last 7 years, like with anything trendy -_-, but around £1,700 still seems mental to me. o_O

Anyway, it’s the sad reality of supply and demand, as Beaujabote said... 😞

At least for the Dobermann coming from Serbia, it seems more justified: the price of the dog plus transport, that feels a bit more reasonable.

Hi! Correct me if I’m wrong, but regardless of its pedigree, the dog won't be able to get its breed certification in France or be registered with the LOF (the French breed registry) because of its ears/tail... right? Spot on, no official certification is possible in France. However, the Serbian pedigree is recognised by the FCI. France requires a "confirmation" assessment for the dog to get its full pedigree and for its offspring to be registered in the LOF, but in other countries, this exam isn't mandatory. In those places, the puppy has a full pedigree from birth rather than just a birth certificate. It’s the breeder’s awards and credentials that carry weight for shows in other countries...

    Hi there

Unless I'm mistaken, pedigree or not, the dog won't be able to be Kennel Club registered or officially recognised because of the ears and tail... right?

Great, thanks for your help. The puppy should be coming with a pet passport, pedigree papers in my name, and will be microchipped, vaccinated and wormed. Keep us updated on the new arrival and don't forget to post a photo of the little monster!

Hi, I know someone who paid over £1,700 for an Australian Shepherd at a dog show, so £2,000 doesn’t seem excessive for a puppy from a reputable breeder (even if it is in Serbia) including the transport cost. Actually, it’s all relative: £2,000 isn’t excessive compared to £1,700, but £1,700 for an Aussie seems over the top compared to the £680 mine "cost" me when I bought him. Mind you, that was 7 years ago and the person you know might have had some extras thrown in (a year’s supply of free dry food, a gold collar encrusted with diamonds... XD), but that much of a difference seems massive. If the transport from Serbia justifies a price of £2,000 for the Doberman, I wonder what on earth justifies a price of £1,700 for an Australian Shepherd here in the UK? 😧🤷 But then again, it’s all relative, it’s down to the individual, and I haven’t got all the facts. 😉 To be honest, Australian Shepherds from a breeder, sold at 8 weeks, usually cost around £1,000 on average now...

Hi, I’m planning on buying a puppy from Serbia, and they’ll be transported over to my home. The breeder is asking for around £2,000, which includes the transport, vaccinations, worming, and microchipping. Do you think that price is excessive? It’s a fair bit of money, BUT when you add the transport costs on top of the price of the pup, it’s actually quite reasonable. Be sure to keep a close eye on the travel conditions for the puppy, though. You need to be really strict about the paperwork and don’t forget to book a check-up with the vet! I only know the breeder by name; I’d love to have a puppy from them myself as they’re known for being very reliable. However, if you don’t go there in person, you can’t see the breeding conditions for yourself, which is why you still have to be very careful, even with a reputable breeder!
