Paw pad skin peeling off

Hello,

I’ll give you a quick rundown of the situation. I have a 4-year-old female Dalmatian who is more used to walks by the lake and on flat ground.

But I decided to try a forest walk yesterday afternoon — a route I’d done with my previous dog seven years ago without any trouble.

But by the time we got back, the state of her front paw pads was honestly not great. Practically all the skin is peeling away, leaving the raw skin underneath exposed.

It was her first proper outing of the year, and being out of practice after the winter, combined with the terrain being too steep, it clearly wasn't the best idea...

Before I call the vet, what can I do to soothe them? And actually, do you think she can recover without having to go to the vet?

    Oh, poor girl...

Yes, you definitely need to keep it clean and make sure it’s protected as much as possible when she’s out for walks, but try to let it air out every now and then—use a cone so she doesn’t lick it.

In any case, give the vet a ring to book an appointment as it needs to be looked at before Monday (given the size of it, she might need antibiotics).

    Oh dear,

As titejava said, disinfect it and get to the vet tomorrow.... And in my opinion, you're looking at doing dressings for a while after that...

Ouch, she’s really done herself a mischief, your poor girl! Right now, I’d suggest disinfecting it—use an antiseptic like Betadine if you’ve got any, or hydrogen peroxide—and try to put a little bandage on it, at least for the night. It’ll help keep the dirt out since the skin is so raw. I don’t think it’ll heal on its own, so you really ought to see a vet. If it’s not treated properly, it’s likely to get infected...
