Paw pad skin peeling off

Hello,

I’ll give you a quick rundown of the situation. I have a 4-year-old female Dalmatian who is more used to walks by the lake and on flat ground.

But I decided to try a forest walk yesterday afternoon — a route I’d done with my previous dog seven years ago without any trouble.

But by the time we got back, the state of her front paw pads was honestly not great. Practically all the skin is peeling away, leaving the raw skin underneath exposed.

It was her first proper outing of the year, and being out of practice after the winter, combined with the terrain being too steep, it clearly wasn't the best idea...

Before I call the vet, what can I do to soothe them? And actually, do you think she can recover without having to go to the vet?

    Hi there

If you’re getting some boots for him, I’d definitely invest in some socks too, or even just some cheap baby socks.

The boots on their own can end up hurting them or chafing their paws because of the rubbing. It depends on the boots, really.

It happened to my girl, so I started putting baby socks on her as well :)

Wishing your little one a speedy recovery

Quoupo, you were absolutely right to head to the vet. Blimey, all four paws! 😯 Anyway, you handled it brilliantly! And your girl’s got some cracking little boots there – seriously, I quite like them! Even though I’m sure both of you could’ve done without them. She’ll be fine; it’ll just take a bit of time for the pads to heal and toughen back up. 😉 So, new boots on Tuesday I expect. You must be so relieved you went to the vet – phew, what a fright! But honestly, you’ve done a great job! Sending love and cuddles to your lovely Dalmatian girl!

Well... all four paws, actually! 😔 The two front ones are definitely the worst: one has the whole main pad peeled off (with a flap of skin attached by less than half an inch), and the other is the one in the photo. The back left paw has a blue bandage on it too, as there’s a bit of raw skin on two of the toes. The last paw only has a crack, so I’ve left that one as it is.

Yes, it was definitely worth a trip to the vet...

    But are several paws affected?

For the future, you can get pad tougheners that help make the pads more hard-wearing.

    Love the blue shoes 🤣

Good evening, sorry for the late update. The vet decided to keep her in for a bit to remove the flaps of skin under sedation, clean and disinfect everything, and put on some proper bandages to last the weekend.

So, they'll need changing on Tuesday!

The pads aren't deeply damaged; it's "only" the top layer of skin that's been affected, so we'll have to be patient and wait for the layer underneath to toughen up and take over.

Poor little girl, I hope the vet is gentle with her...

You’re lucky you managed to get a vet appointment...

around here, they’re closed... (emergency service only)

For future walks, you’ll need to prep her paws like they do for hiking dogs,

or buy some boots (which will save you a lot of hassle).

Some dogs just have more sensitive pads, even within the same breed...

    See you later this afternoon...

Thanks for the advice, I’ve disinfected and bandaged her paws.

After half a night's sleep, she’s limping quite a bit, and I’ve got a vet appointment at 1 pm.

    Oh gosh, yeah, poor thing...

The vet, there’s no other choice... you’ve got to go...

    It’s peeled back too far...

She must be in absolute agony... (it makes you think of a shard of glass or a sharp rock...)

What are her other pads like?

Will you keep us posted on how she gets on?
