Paw pad skin peeling off

Hello,

I’ll give you a quick rundown of the situation. I have a 4-year-old female Dalmatian who is more used to walks by the lake and on flat ground.

But I decided to try a forest walk yesterday afternoon — a route I’d done with my previous dog seven years ago without any trouble.

But by the time we got back, the state of her front paw pads was honestly not great. Practically all the skin is peeling away, leaving the raw skin underneath exposed.

It was her first proper outing of the year, and being out of practice after the winter, combined with the terrain being too steep, it clearly wasn't the best idea...

Before I call the vet, what can I do to soothe them? And actually, do you think she can recover without having to go to the vet?

Evening, I’m a bit late replying, but hopefully this will help anyone who comes across it later. My dog recently had the same sores on her front pads after an afternoon spent running around by the pool with some other dogs. I decided not to go to the vet and opted for a natural treatment instead. First I disinfected the wounds, then I applied calendula oil every morning and night for several days. It’s miracle stuff – in just a few days the skin peeled away, leaving the skin underneath toughened and healthy again. Have a lovely evening.

If your dog has a persistent issue with her paw pads, you should see a vet, as it could be down to various underlying health conditions.

Hi, what did it turn out to be in the end? Mine has had this on her pads for several weeks now and I’m at my wits' end! I’ve tried everything: dog boots every day, special cream, I hardly take her out anymore, she’s kept out of the sun, etc. etc. Please help me! :-/

Honestly, I hadn’t heard of this honey either. I know honey has some great benefits in general, but I’ve got to admit I’m not familiar with that specific one 😳

We’ve seen two vets now—the out-of-hours vet on Saturday and our regular vet today for a check-up.

I’d never heard of Manuka honey until two weeks ago when I came across a programme about emergency vets. Talk about a coincidence 😒

    wow!!!!!!!!!!

It’s healed so quickly!!!!!! Your girl is a proper little warrior!!!!!

I think you’ve got a really good vet there; I don’t know many who recommend honey, even though it’s brilliant!

Thanks for the update, it’s lovely to hear 🙂

So, the vet felt she was recovering quite well and didn't think she needed any fresh bandages. In fact, letting her paws air out can help her pads "work" a bit more now.

+ manuka honey to help with the healing at night.

Thanks everyone for the quick advice. I’d pretty much decided to see a vet anyway, but I wanted to be sure what to do in the meantime and whether it could wait a day or two – but the limping the next morning was what really made up my mind. Thinking about it now, I have noticed a few times that her pads are quite damp after walks. Maybe that played a part as well, given how long we were out in the woods... Anyway, I think we’ll be sticking to the lakeside or flat ground for a good while 🤦
