My dog has cancer.

Hi everyone, I wanted to share my story with you all.

My 8-year-old Czechoslovakian Wolfdog, Slevin, started showing symptoms of bloat (GDV) on Wednesday evening before he'd even had his dinner. I rushed him to the emergency vet in Annecy straight away so he could be seen as quickly as possible. The X-rays showed that his stomach was distended but hadn't twisted yet, so the vet gave him an injection to make him sick and empty his stomach. After a few hours of observation and a follow-up X-ray, we were allowed to go home.

The next day, Slev was completely lethargic; he wasn't moving or eating, though he was drinking normally. The vet had warned me this would likely happen and told me not to worry; I just had to keep an eye on him to make sure his tummy didn't swell up any further.

By Friday, he seemed much better and was a lot less tired. He was getting around on his own, was happy to see me, and was even hopping up on the sofa... However, the swelling in his abdomen still hadn't gone down and he was still refusing to eat.

The following morning (Saturday), there was still no change, and he actually seemed worse than the day before, so I took him to our regular vet for a check-up. She was worried by his behaviour and referred me to another clinic for further tests (blood work, ultrasound, etc.) and to have him admitted.

The ultrasound results were worrying; his abdomen was actually distended because it was full of blood. The internal bleeding was caused by a tumour on his spleen which had ruptured.

Slevin had to have an emergency splenectomy (removal of the spleen) last night. The vets drained 3 litres of blood (about 5 and a quarter pints); his haemoglobin levels are down to just 2g/dL, but he survived the surgery and I've just brought him back home.

Right now, he's sleeping next to me, but he's still refusing to eat. I won't have the pathology results for about ten days, but the vet suspects it’s a haemangiosarcoma.

It looks like my poor boy only has a few weeks left to live. There’s still a small chance it could be a benign tumour since they didn't find any metastases in his abdomen or heart during the surgery or on the scan, but apparently, that diagnosis is quite unlikely. I’m trying not to get my hopes up.

I don’t even know how to put my heartbreak into words.

I’m posting my experience so that you can share yours with me too.

Some of you might have advice regarding palliative care or treatments that improved the quality of life for your four-legged friends...

At this stage, I just want to make his end as comfortable as possible; I’d love for him to see the snow and enjoy it one last time.

Hi everyone, My beautiful boy isn’t doing well today. Since this morning, his tummy has been bloated again and he seems to be in a lot of pain; he’s refusing to eat and his breathing isn’t quite right, he’s completely lethargic. On our walk this morning, Slev suddenly lay down in the grass by the roadside and wouldn't get back up; we had to carry him all the way home. He’s sleeping next to me at the moment and doesn’t seem any worse, but I think it’s finally time for us to let him go. I rang the vet this morning, but unfortunately she can’t do a home visit today as she’s the only one at the surgery, so I’ve got an appointment there at 5.30pm. I’ll see what she thinks, but I’m bracing myself for the possibility of bringing my boy back home tonight after he’s passed away. I’m in tears writing this... I really don’t want to go, but there’s nothing more I can do for him and seeing him like this is breaking my heart.

Hi everyone, Thank you for all your stories. I’m in the same boat; I only got the news about my girl yesterday. After reading your posts, I’ve decided to do my best for her, supporting her and keeping her comfortable. Lots of good food, painkillers, and letting her go when she’s ready.

Hi there, My heart goes out to you after hearing such awful news. Cherish every moment with him and spoil him with whatever he wants and everything he loves. When the time comes, he will pass away peacefully, surrounded by love. Like everyone else here who has been through this, my thoughts are with you.

Stay strong. Do everything you can to make sure he doesn't pick up on your distress. As far as he's concerned, he doesn't know. Give him the very best and let him feel all your love. Having him put to sleep at home is a great option when the time comes. And when it’s your turn to go through it, tell yourself he’ll pass away without fear, and that many strangers who’ve been where you are now are thinking of you. But for now, chin up—our dogs are like sponges, so try to show as little of your heartache as possible.

Such awful news... At least your little one is doing well and still has a good appetite! Now is the time to spoil him rotten, so he only has the best things on his mind – and for you to have those memories too, for when the time eventually comes... Make the most of your time together; there are surely still memories to be made and definitely more good times to be shared! Just try to live in the moment for a while without worrying about tomorrow, so your boy doesn't get anxious seeing you so upset... Thinking of you. And give Slev a big cuddle from me.

I am so sorry to hear about the diagnosis.

As I mentioned in my first post, I went through the same thing about eighteen months ago.

Make the most of this time and spoil them with everything they love—steak, fish, toys. Seeing them tucking in and getting excited does you the world of good. Don’t worry about them putting on a few extra pounds; it really doesn't matter at this stage.

Sending you lots of strength; they almost certainly don't realise anything is wrong.

    Hi everyone,

Thank you all for your replies. As promised, I’m checking in with an update.

The vet called me yesterday afternoon with Slev’s results and, as I feared, they aren’t good; the diagnosis of hemangiosarcoma has been confirmed.

Slevin is terminal and there’s nothing more that can be done—no chemo, no medication. He should be okay for another few days or weeks, but after that, things will go downhill very quickly. The vet has offered to come to the house to put him to sleep when the time comes, so that it happens in familiar surroundings, without any stress or pain.

We had his stitches out today (well, what was left of them anyway, as Slev had already pulled half of them out himself—it’s actually still a bit open in one spot! ^^'). For now, he’s doing well; I’m taking great care of him and he’s eating like a horse! He’s happy and that’s the main thing, but it’s still very hard to process everything.

Seeing him looking so well and knowing that he’ll be leaving us soon on that final journey, and that there’s absolutely nothing we can do—feeling completely helpless—is the worst feeling in the world.

My heart goes out to everyone who has been through this or has lost a four-legged friend. I’m thinking of you all.

Wishing you all a lovely evening,

    Charlène

So sorry to hear this... of course we'll be following your thread and checking in for updates. Until the results are back, let's try to stay positive—one step at a time. I lost my faithful companion to pancreatic cancer. We made the most of every moment, and as soon as he started to suffer, my vet and I made the decision to let him go. Just before, I took him for his favourite walk in the woods. He didn't have the strength to run, but we just sat there together for an hour, and then I stayed with him until the end... It's such a difficult time, but our fur babies are tough cookies 😉 and since you haven't got the results yet, we've got everything crossed for you.

Good evening, I’m so sorry for you. Tomorrow, my dog is having an eye removed. He’s a gorgeous crossbreed—quite big, bright, and friendly, and really, really handsome too. He has an episcleral melanoma. I was absolutely devastated when I first found it, and then again when it was confirmed. Tonight, I’m staying as close to him as I can; I want to be strong for him in the coming days. He’s only three, and all his life, we’ve spent our time running through the woods and forests in the countryside. We have such a deep bond because of our walks and the fact it’s just the two of us. I originally got him because I was ill myself. Now, it’s my turn to help him...

    Sending you strength

Hi Charlene, Such sad news, but remember that a Czechoslovakian Wolfdog is a tough breed and they’re real fighters; wait for the results (I’m crossing my fingers too). Yes, give him some wet food if he’ll eat it, that’s a start at least; and as for the dry food, what if you soaked it and mixed it in with the wet food? Stay strong, both of you, and tell him his cousins Génésys and Jyrkhos are sending him positive vibes. 🙂
