Should I get my male Cocker Spaniel neutered?

Hi everyone,

I have an 8-month-old Cocker Spaniel and I wanted to know if it's necessary to get him neutered. He's a male called Bill; he doesn't have any behavioural issues at the moment, but I'm thinking about it as a preventative measure.

Are there any downsides to neutering?

Does a neutered Cocker Spaniel end up looking unattractive?

Thanks

My dog is nearly 4 years old. He was neutered at about 8 months, before I adopted him. He certainly hasn't lost his looks, far from it! For all dogs, neutered or not, a good diet and plenty of exercise is enough to stop them from putting on weight!
Hi Aggie, do you have a cocker spaniel?

No, he’s not a cocker spaniel, but what I said applies to all dogs... 😉

When you click on your own username, the site shows you a summary of all the threads you’ve been involved in. This makes it easy to find them again if you’ve been away from the site for a bit. In my opinion, if people are going out of their way to try and help with a problem, the bare minimum should be to at least acknowledge that you’ve read their advice. If you aren’t clear enough about the situation you’re describing—for instance, if you get your timelines mixed up—people will quickly stop taking you seriously, which is only fair.

Don't worry docline, the issue has been sorted with a good trainer since then (it’s been 5 days now!) – maybe Caroline Lange? 😆 You’re not funny, you know. I don't really know how to use this site properly yet. Like I said, read my message again and you'll understand it better. I don't appreciate you taking the mickey.

My spaniel, who was spayed when she was about 10, kept the same coat texture. (Regarding Xxomar's other posts, there’s nothing to suggest he’s reading the messages on every page; in any case, there’s no update on how the issues mentioned have progressed, which is a bit disheartening for the people who took the time to think it through for him.)

Sorry, I’m new to this site and I don’t really know how to use it yet. So, as for the behavioural issues, Bill and I went to see a dog trainer. Apparently, it wasn’t the dog’s fault but mine—let me explain: before meeting the trainer, Bill used to sleep on my bed and eat at the same time as me, he wouldn't let me anywhere near his food bowl, and there were plenty of other problems like that. Since we've been following Bill's training plan, things have been getting better and better every day (we’ve been working with the trainer for 3 months now). I originally started this thread to get a broader range of opinions on my situation with Bill—well, my old situation with Bill, anyway.

Sorry again for not giving an update; I’m new to the site and I’m still just finding my feet.

My spaniel was spayed when she was about 10 and her coat texture has stayed the same. (Regarding Xxomar’s other posts, there’s no sign that he’s actually reading the messages on all the pages; in any case, there’s no update on how the issues he mentioned are progressing, which is a bit discouraging for the people who took the time to really think things through for him.)
