Hello, my 3-year-old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel has swallowed some frying oil. My gran left the oil in a pan outside to cool down. Around 8 am this morning, my dog drank quite a bit of it – not an enormous amount, but a fair bit. Fortunately, it was already cold. At about 3 pm, he started vomiting and coughing repeatedly. We called the vet, and they gave us some charcoal (Carbodote, for digestion and absorption) to protect his liver. We gave him a dose straight away at 3:45 pm, and he needs another one this evening.

Has anyone else experienced this, or could you give me some advice? My dog is a bit lethargic and I’m really worried.

Hi there, Cooking oil can cause vomiting and lethargy, but it isn’t usually toxic. Activated charcoal is appropriate. You should keep an eye on their appetite and hydration, and watch out for any serious signs (repeated vomiting, bloody diarrhoea, or a fever). Best regards, Romane

    Hi there,

it’s not going to kill him.

For info, I’ve got two Cavalier King Charles Spaniels and they don’t touch anything they haven’t been given. It’s up to you to train them, in every respect, especially for safety reasons.

*Something to keep in mind (I think it’s important):

    - They have to wait for my “go-ahead” before eating. Most of the time it’s still a bit hot.

    - I’ve trained them from the very start about eating things off the floor.

I’m not judging. I’m just explaining and taking the liberty of mentioning this point.

Hi there, same thing here. I left my dog for 30 minutes with a Kong and some toys, but when I got back, he’d torn apart a bottle of rapeseed oil. I’m worried he might have drunk some of it because he’s really lethargic, which isn’t like him at all as he’s normally so playful.

    Can anyone help me?

Did he throw up the oil? (The sick should have been greasy in that case). With the charcoal and since it wasn’t a massive amount (he didn’t empty the pan, did he?), he should be fine. He’s likely to have a proper bout of diarrhoea. If your vet isn’t worried, it’s all good. Give him a tiny portion tonight just to be safe. My dog once wolfed down a whole pack of butter I’d put out for a cake. She threw it up ten minutes later and went back to her own business as if nothing had happened. Thanks for the reply. No, he didn’t empty the pan. He was sick on the grass so we couldn't see it very well, but there was some dry food in it and yes, it might have been a bit oily but not massively so.

No worries, there’s a risk of diarrhoea as well as the vomiting, but it’s not going to kill him :) A bit of a fast (I don’t think he’ll be very hungry anyway as he’ll probably feel quite nauseous) and some charcoal will do him some good ^^ Thanks for getting back to me. How long should he fast for? Without eating anything at all? I’m much more relieved now, I was honestly so worried.
