My dog has started peeing in her bed at night

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for some advice and opinions because...

Pixie sleeps in her bed in our bedroom (at the foot of the bed).

Two nights ago, in the middle of the night, I heard her making a bit of a fuss. I got up and found she’d flipped her bed over. She’d actually peed in it (and she obviously didn’t want to sleep on the wet side). We put it down to her having a dream and having an accident (she never even did that as a puppy before she was house-trained).

I washed her bed.

Then last night, it happened again, but this time just as we were going to bed (even though we’d just taken her out and she’d definitely done her business, I checked).

Wait, what???

I expect you're going to ask if there have been any changes at home... Well, what can I say? During lockdown, the only thing that’s really changed is that we’re at home all day and we’re getting up an hour and a half later than usual... but otherwise, it’s just the normal routine!

She’s a little bit more active at the moment because we have more time for her, whereas usually she comes to work with me and sleeps all day.

Other than that, nothing...

Thanks for your replies

Yeah, so far it's only happened at night...

I'm going to give her her other bed (the one she has in the living room) to see if she goes in that one as well...

Hello, Lots of dogs have been affected by the lockdown and the changes to their routine. Pinpointing exactly what's triggering behavioural issues isn't always easy, but you don't want your girl to get into a bad habit. You might need to go back to basics with house-training, at least until this behaviour stops. If you catch her peeing in her bed, give her a firm "no" and take her straight outside (I know it’s hard to find the motivation in the middle of the night, but it’s really important) and give her plenty of praise when she goes outside. She should be house-trained again in no time. However, if you don't see any improvement, or if she starts having accidents during the day or more frequently, it might not just be a behavioural issue. It could be incontinence, which can be down to all sorts of things. In that case, don't hesitate to get in touch with your vet, even if it’s just to get a professional opinion on the situation. Best of luck, Florine
