Any idea why my dog peed on the bed?

Hi everyone,

This might be one of those questions without a definite answer... but if there's a reason behind it, I'd really like to know. I was honestly stunned for a good while, just wondering why on earth she did it...

For a bit of context:

I've got an 8-month-old Cavalier who is 'mostly' house-trained (we still have the odd accident). For instance, we'd just gone four days without a single accident indoors.

Since it's summer at the moment, we keep the patio doors open whenever we're in. She can come and go as she pleases to do her business or play.

In the evenings, we often watch a film in bed, and she's allowed to join us. Then, it's off to her dog bed when it's time to sleep.

So, here's what happened...

Yesterday was a normal evening: she was outside chasing moths, while we hopped into bed to watch a film. Then she comes back in (to join us as usual), jumps onto the bed and—bam! A massive wee right in front of us on the duvet (even though she'd literally just been outside a minute before).

Honestly, I haven't got a clue... she's never done anything like that before!

Do you have any explanation? Or did she just have a little accident?

Thanks in advance if anyone has an answer!

Haha yeah, for sure. They don’t live together, so there’s bound to be some excitement when they see each other. But the Boxer is a bit of a bruiser without meaning to be; you can really see she’s trying not to be rough because she knows Pixie is tiny, but one little swipe of a paw and Pixie gets totally flattened lol... Mind you, my little girl is really very small (only about 9 lbs at 8 months old).

Regarding the original question, no, she wasn’t scared of anything—she was just really excited to jump on the bed (it’s her absolute favourite thing ^^). Then again, maybe she finally managed to catch a moth and wanted to share her victory... lol

@Merline 😁 I couldn't let this one pass! I've been waiting for ages to finally read something about Cavaliers, and a Boxer as a bonus too! You can bet I didn't hesitate to jump right in!

ADB, I saw you coming a mile oooooooooooooff! 😁😁 You cheeky rascal!

EDIT: You beat me to it, lol!

Right then, I reckon her first season is a likely lead, but otherwise, could she have had a proper fright outside?

She came charging back but didn't seem panicked or over-excited (maybe she ran into a hedgehog... or something else? Is that possible??)

    Oh!!!! 😍😍😍

Right, I’ll address your concern first! So yes, if the little lady is in season, the hormonal shift can make them quite emotional, and accidents or excitement weeing can definitely happen... Just carry on as usual and it’ll pass. She’s also going through puberty, so watch out for the "terrible teens" phase! 😉

Right, I can gush now! But 😍😍😍😍 A Boxer and a Cavalier together is just brilliant (especially with a Boxer personality apparently! I thought the little one seemed very playful and energetic!). What’s your Cavalier’s temperament like? If she’s the dominant type, as she grows up, she might end up putting the goofy Boxer in his place if he’s a bit more submissive... After a certain age, it doesn’t matter as much; the puppy grows up and their natural personality plus energy level determines their place in the pack.

Our 1-year-old is definitely holding her own against the 8-year-old "old girl" who used to boss her around (she’s staying with us for the holidays, also a Boxer).

Size-wise, yeah, it’s a bit tricky. It also depends on whether your Boxer was socialised with small dogs; ours is a real bruiser with Mastiffs, Amstaffs, Akitas... but she’s really careful around a Yorkie 😅

So you’re holding the lead and only letting him approach when he’s calmer? That’s a great method! You also need to separate them often, which is normal so the energy doesn't escalate too quickly—otherwise, one Boxer hip-check and the Cavalier will be sent flying! 😁

But the Boxer will get it eventually; they’re clumsy and quite daft... LOL... but they eventually understand that you have to be gentle with smaller ones, just like with children. It’s a shame they don’t live together because the excitement is there every time they meet, like "Oh, hello mate!!!". Tiring the Boxer out a bit before they meet up could be a good idea too! No, age won’t change things massively, just a little—when the 8-year-old lady lets loose, it’s quite something to see!

Ahlala, it’s wonderful! Yes, @Lacurieuse is right, we’re actually thinking about getting a Cavalier as a second dog! Your post is such a lovely surprise! Don't hesitate if you want to chat more about it!!! 😁😇

Here’s a quick snap of Pixie and Nina :) We have to hold Nina every time to prevent any accidents, it’s quite a workout for us :D

Ahhhhh, that makes sense – she’s actually been in her first season for two days now... There might be a connection there!

So, yes, I can tell you a bit about the Cavalier/Boxer dynamic as there’s a Boxer in my family!

Here’s a bit about my girl (though I’m not sure if all Cavaliers are like this). There are pros and cons to the breed:

    - She’s veeeery (perhaps too) sociable. She loves everyone (humans and animals alike) and isn’t cautious at all (she’ll approach a Chihuahua just as readily as a Dobermann...).

    - She’s very affectionate, gives loads of licks, but she’s also very clingy. It can even be a bit much at times as she follows me absolutely everywhere. You really need to be around for them.

    - Also, mine is quite stubborn and a bit boisterous (mind you, she’s only 8 months old). My husband, who’s always lived with Boxers, says she has the personality of a Boxer.

I regularly see my Cavalier with my in-laws’ Boxer (who is 2 and a half). They adore each other, but the real issue is the difference in size and strength. If your Boxer is like my in-laws’ and struggles to control their strength, it’s tricky because the Cavalier just gets bowled over... Even though they want to play together, we’re always having to separate them. Perhaps we just need to wait until the Boxer is a bit older and less hyper for the relationship to work better.

I’ve just realised! You’ve got a Cavalier! You’ll have to tell me more! What’s she like? Her energy levels, personality, temperament, how she gets on with other dogs, her favourite toys... if you don’t mind, of course! ADB is thinking about getting a Cavalier to keep her Boxer company, which is why she’s asking! Excitement could definitely be the cause, or maybe she just forgot (mine has been so distracted on a walk before that she completely forgot to go to the loo, and then did her business in the garden as soon as we got home)! Marking is also a possibility, although I don’t have any personal experience with that, so I couldn't say for sure if that’s what's going on in your case.
