Bowed front legs – any advice?

Hi everyone, I’m new to the forum, so please let me know if I’m not doing this right.

A week ago, we brought home a lovely two-month-old Cane Corso puppy, Razzia. We’re having a bit of an issue now as her front legs look very bowed after she’s been walking for a while—it’s at the point where she’s actually limping. Does anyone have any advice? With the lockdown, we can't get to see our vet at the moment 😥. Thanks in advance!

I haven't got much time to reply properly, but you really need to see a vet... It’s far too pronounced (and like @Jador mentioned, that's not a good stance at all). It might even suggest she's in a lot of pain... is there anything stuck between her pads? Any redness? I must admit, I've rarely seen that kind of posture, especially with a puppy... As for the dry food (Pedigree), yes, definitely ditch that... the ingredients aren't good at all for your little girl... And how long are your walks? That’s really important. At two months old, a walk should be 20 to 30 minutes max at a gentle pace (with a few stops). Especially since she’s already limping, I’d suggest limiting it to 15-minute sessions, three times a day, and just keep it very short for toilet breaks. In all honesty, I don't think just changing her diet will fix her limp and posture that quickly. X-rays?! Or at least a visit to get a good vet's opinion.

Hi there, I usually buy Power of Nature dry food for my pooch as it’s got a great nutritional profile and is good value for money. I can only ever find it on a German website (which normally delivers in 3 or 4 days at most), but I didn’t plan ahead and ran out of my 26lb bag. With all the delivery issues lately, I decided to order some Amikinos instead. This dry food is also top quality. It’s a bit on the pricey side, admittedly, but it’s made by a family-run French company that sells directly from their site. I think they arrived in about 5 days, and they’re still shipping as normal. Otherwise, Orijen (the Canadian brand) is also brilliant, but it can be a bit tricky to get hold of sometimes. There have been quite a few stock shortages lately. Have a look at the website if you fancy.

Thanks; what would you recommend for dry food? I’ve just called my vet and they agree with you that I should switch his food, considering the specific needs of this breed. I’m going to change it immediately, making sure to follow a proper transition. He says that this on its own might solve the problem. If not, I’ll give him a supplement.

I agree with Emla, Pedigree is very poor quality.

As for your photos, the posture doesn't look right. It depends on what you mean by "a while" of exertion... You should see your vet.

    It looks like joint inflammation.

I’d get in touch with a vet straight away.

As for Pedigree, I reckon the quality is quite poor.

The top photo is after she’s been walking for a bit and the bottom one is from when she gets up in the morning—no issues at all, her paws look fine.

Hi everyone and thanks for your replies. To be a bit more specific, she doesn't have any issues when she gets up in the morning, but if she's been walking for half an hour, her legs start to bow and she limps. After some rest, she's back to normal. To answer your questions, yes, she came from a breeder, but no, I haven't contacted them yet. I did get a health certificate, everything was done properly, and I saw the parents who didn't have any health problems. I've read on a few sites that it could be down to her diet not being rich enough for her rapid growth; she's currently on Pedigree Junior Vital Protection.

    Hi there,

If your puppy came from a breeder, make sure to let them know in writing. For one thing, they might be able to share their experience with you, and also, depending on how things go, you might have some form of recourse against the breeder if you've flagged the issue early on.

Finally, just like Doudou229, I think you really need to see the vet, or at the very least give them a ring to see what they think.

Hi, Have you contacted the breeder about this issue? If they’ve done everything by the book, your little one should have been seen by a vet for microchipping and a health certificate, which must be provided with the sales contract. If not, give the vet a ring. See if they can fit you in—vets aren't closed, but they are prioritising cases at the moment. I went in yesterday to pick up some Nexgard and worming treatment for my dog, making sure to phone ahead for a time slot, and the vet was seeing a cat with a sore paw.
