A bit strange...

I bought my dog a new toy yesterday! It’s a squeaky toy, and she hasn’t let it out of her sight since she got it! But the thing is, not only will she not leave it alone, but she’s pacing around the whole house with the toy in her mouth and crying! I thought she might be bored, so I took her out 12 times yesterday, but every single time all she wanted to do was get back home, grab her toy and start crying again...

It’s the first time she’s ever acted like this...

She’s never cried before... I’m trying to reassure her, give her a fuss, talk to her... but nothing works, she just keeps going....

How should I interpret her crying? What is she trying to tell me?

Thanks in advance!

PS: If I don’t reply, it's just because I’ve had to head off to uni!!

Because she has ehrlichiosis at such an advanced stage and she wouldn't survive the operation... my vet advised me to treat the illness first and then have her spayed... otherwise I’d have had it done ages ago...

Why can't you get her spayed?

If you don't mind me asking, Solenneb, why can’t he have the operation?

Thanks! That’s what I was thinking but I wasn’t sure... I’ve already taken it away from her! And no, unfortunately my girl isn't spayed... I can't get her booked in for the operation! She’s already had her first season and she had a phantom pregnancy... :S (she was 8 months old) but for her second season everything went fine! Thanks for your advice... The only thing I don’t get is why it’s with THIS toy? She’s had other squeaky toys before and she’s never had this reaction! This one is shaped like a little round chicken...

P'tite fleur, I promise you it's definitely possible. My girl had one right after her first season; she was spayed very early on, we didn't even wait for her second season, so she was less than a year old.

Once a dog is sexually mature, hormonal influences can kick in at any time.

Your girl is only a year old... a phantom pregnancy is what it's called... I don't really think so... but...

If she hasn't been spayed yet, get it done for her own sake, and no more squeaky toys... lol

Yeah, it sounds like the symptoms of a phantom pregnancy...

Take the toy away from her!

Has your girl been spayed? My Boxer back in the day had a phantom pregnancy with that kind of toy after her first season, so we ended up having her spayed sooner than planned, even though we’d always intended to do it anyway. I’ve had some bad experiences with unspayed dogs; both of mine had issues after their first season, and one of them nearly died (thankfully she pulled through). If it’s not been done yet, definitely think about getting her spayed, especially if she’s starting to show these sorts of symptoms. Plus, Boxers are quite prone to tumours, so it’ll at least help prevent certain types of cancer.

Gabbana also cries with squeaky toys. My vet told me she probably thinks the toy is a puppy. Because of that, we've taken the squeaky toys away, as hearing your dog cry 24/7 isn't ideal for her or for us. Plus, as mentioned above, it’s possible she might be starting a phantom pregnancy, so it’s best to remove any squeaky toys.

Yeah, and it looks a bit like the behaviour of a dog going through a phantom pregnancy. I’m not saying that’s definitely what she’s doing, just that it reminds me of that kind of behaviour...

It’s as if she’s mothering her toy, which isn’t good at all...
