A bit strange...

I bought my dog a new toy yesterday! It’s a squeaky toy, and she hasn’t let it out of her sight since she got it! But the thing is, not only will she not leave it alone, but she’s pacing around the whole house with the toy in her mouth and crying! I thought she might be bored, so I took her out 12 times yesterday, but every single time all she wanted to do was get back home, grab her toy and start crying again...

It’s the first time she’s ever acted like this...

She’s never cried before... I’m trying to reassure her, give her a fuss, talk to her... but nothing works, she just keeps going....

How should I interpret her crying? What is she trying to tell me?

Thanks in advance!

PS: If I don’t reply, it's just because I’ve had to head off to uni!!

We’re currently thinking about getting her spayed!!! I’ve spoken to my vet about it and they told me to wait out the remaining two months of treatment and then see!! But yes, as soon as we’re able to get her operated on, we definitely will... and I’m always checking her teats because she’s already had a phantom pregnancy before and it was really tough for her...

You should really look into getting her spayed though. We had our first Boxer spayed when she was 4, but only after she'd had two tumours (which appeared every time after she'd been in season and had phantom pregnancies, with the same behaviour as yours). We had one of them operated on and her mammary chain removed, even though she was a really fragile dog – heart problems, epilepsy... the list goes on. We had to have her put to sleep this year at the age of 12 and a half, so... she was very resilient, but looking back we could have avoided half of those problems. Our new dog is only 4 months old; we're waiting for her first season (on the vet's advice) and then we'll have her operated on... hoping none of that happens to her!!!!!

PS: Keep a close eye on her teats to make sure they aren't swelling and that there's no milk leaking.

My dog is absolutely obsessed with his squeaky ball!!! He whines if it goes under the sofa and tries to shove the sofa to get it, crying the whole time!!! If I put it away in a drawer, he just sits there staring at it!!! He doesn't have this issue with his other similar toys... I don't think it's a phantom pregnancy unless there are other symptoms!!! Plus, he's a boy and he’s been neutered since he was 4 months old...

Well, I was thinking of getting one for my dog, but your posts have really put me off! Thanks, I think she’ll manage without it!!! Mind you, she’s got loads of toys already so it’s no big deal!! I’d read online that puppies really loved this toy, though!!!!!

Yeah, it’s true, my girl wasn’t doing well at all. The vet even told me that he didn’t think she’d make it because the illness was caught so late… I honestly thought I was going to lose her… she weighed only 39 lbs… when she should have been 55 lbs… After a month of treatment, she’d put 9 lbs back on and was full of beans (maybe a bit of an exaggeration XD). Anyway, she had a really good reaction to the meds! But sadly, that’s not enough… she’s still weak and needs special care… but I’m going to do everything I can to keep her with me for as long as possible!!

Ah right, I see now. Boxers are often prone to all sorts of health issues, but they’re very hardy dogs.

It’s a disease that affects the entire immune system once it reaches an advanced stage, and that’s unfortunately where my girl is at. She’s suffering from tachycardia, kidney failure and anaemia... Unfortunately, I was living in Italy before and the vets there (five of them in total... -_-') had no idea what was wrong with her... It wasn't until I moved back to France that I finally got a diagnosis. She’s now on a really intensive course of treatment which is tough on her and definitely taking a toll on my pocket... She’s slowly getting her strength back bit by bit, but it’s going to be a very, very, very long road to recovery...

    "because she's got ehrlichiosis"

My reply went through after yours.

    What's that then...?

Solenneb you said: "I can't put her through this operation! She's already had her first season and she had a phantom pregnancy... :S (she was 8 months old) and for her second season everything went fine!"

Why can't you get your dog spayed? Every time she goes into season, she's at risk of developing metritis... or getting cancer or a uterine infection.
