My Bernese puppy is tiny – will he catch up?

Hi everyone,

I’ve just picked up my Berner pup and he’s very small compared to the breed standard, though he is perfectly healthy. Do you think he’ll eventually catch up? He’s 2 months old and only weighs 3kg (just over 6 and a half lbs).

I saw both the mum and dad and they were a normal size, even if they weren't massive.

Thanks!

My Bernese puppy is tiny – will he catch up?

Something’s definitely not right; either this dog has dwarfism or another dog managed to get to the mum. My boy was about 5.5 lbs at two months and weighs 24 lbs as an adult. My mum’s Malinois was 11–13 lbs at that age and is now 66–70 lbs (around 5 stone) fully grown. I’m one of those who thinks a puppy should just follow its own growth curve even if it’s below the breed standard, but this pup is following the curve of a dog that’ll be 40 lbs at the very most.

Thank you so much for your reply. We’re keeping an eye on his weight gain; he’s playing and eating, and his poo is normal. His mum had a C-section, so maybe that’s why he’s a bit on the light side. I’ll mention it to the vet at the end of December. Have a good evening!

    Hello Nussette and welcome!

A little Berner, what a cutie! 3kg (about 6.6 lbs) is definitely on the light side... but as long as he's fit, playful, and his poo is solid...

At 2 months, for a KC registered pup, you can see weights around 5kg (11 lbs) on the lower growth curves...

At 3 months, if your pup stays on a lower curve, he'll be between 10kg and 11kg (about 22 to 24 lbs)...

An adult male is usually between 37kg (around 5 stone 11 lbs) and can even reach nearly 60kg (9 stone 6 lbs) for the larger builds...

    https://www.belpatt.fr/courbe-de-poids-chiens/Bouviers-Bernois

The most important thing is that his weight gain stays between 1.5kg and 1.7kg (roughly 3.3 to 3.7 lbs) per week... ^^

And it’s always better to have slow and steady growth for a Berner...

Hi there, 6.6 lbs does indeed seem a bit light for a 2-month-old Bernese Mountain Dog puppy. Is he from a breeder, or did you adopt him from a rescue centre, for example? Do you know his exact date of birth? He might be younger than you think and not quite 2 months old yet. At 3 months, a Bernese puppy weighs about 26.5 lbs on average. However, at this age, puppies put on weight very quickly. There are also individual variations, as some dogs are naturally smaller than others within the same breed. Males are also generally larger than females. I’d suggest having a chat with your vet about it during your next vaccination appointment. Hope this helps, Have a good day, Marion
