Abnormal swelling on the muzzle – what should I do until I can see the vet?

Hi everyone,

It's late, but after her last walk tonight, I’ve noticed Nala has a really itchy muzzle. I’ve had a look and her left jowl is all lumpy and her eyelid is a bit swollen. I don't know what to do or if it's dangerous; she's just scratching at it but she can breathe fine etc.

The vet doesn't open until tomorrow morning, so what should I do in the meantime? I have a pack of anti-inflammatories; would they be any use?

Many thanks

Last summer, my dog came back in from the garden with her jowl swollen up like a tennis ball. I gave my vet a ring and he just told me to keep an eye on her for the next few hours until the swelling started to go down. He said if she showed any signs of being unwell we should head straight to the clinic, but otherwise there was no need. In the end, the swelling went down within about four hours, I reckon, so I didn't end up needing to take her in.

Someone I know had a similar case with their Bulldog who got a grass seed stuck and had to have it surgically removed. Apparently, according to the vet, it’s been a common issue this year with the dry spell we’ve had...

You need to book an emergency appointment with the vet right away, and please let us know how you get on.

Sting or bite! Was that mark there before? Either way, get to the vet straight away! Don't waste time on the forum!

    Hi there,

It could be an allergy; maybe she brushed against something or got stung by a bug.

I had the same thing happen on a Sunday once and had to call the out-of-hours vet.

I hope you’ve managed to get your dog to a vet by now.

If it is an allergy, a steroid jab and some tablets for a few days should see the swelling go down pretty quickly after that.

    😲

If it were my dog, I’d have gone straight to the out-of-hours vet! Or at the very least give them a ring to explain what’s happening; it doesn't matter if you wake them up, it’s their job.

I’ve just had a fairly similar case with my puppy (4 months old, about 66 lbs). He started limping badly on his front left leg during the night between Sunday and Monday. By Monday the joint was swollen --> off to the vet that day, X-rays etc... (cost about £110...)

By Tuesday the whole leg was swollen, even the shoulder! The vet was baffled. What with the treatment and blah blah blah... it’s very strange...

I had an appointment for the following day, Wednesday, but the swelling had finally gone down.

If your dog is swelling as much as mine did but on his face... that’s scary and it’s dangerous!

Allergic reaction??? You need to keep a very close eye on him!
