First dog... Is a Beagle a good idea?

Hi everyone,

I’m 21 years old.

For a few years now, my parents, my little brother and I have been thinking about getting a dog. Since both my parents grew up with dogs, they were quite concerned about how much we would actually get stuck in and help out.

This year, they’ve given me the green light to adopt my first dog, on the understanding that I'll obviously take it with me when I move out.

So, I have loads of questions!

Would a Beagle – a breed I’ve really set my heart on – be a good choice for a first-time owner?

Is it a good idea to get one now, given that its environment is likely to change in about a year or 18 months' time?

Is it better to get a boy or a girl (or is it just down to personal preference)?

Would they be able to live with two guinea pigs?

I’ve already done a bit of research on the breed; I know they need plenty of walks and that they can potentially live in a flat (just to clarify, I currently live in a house with a garden). But I’d really love some real-life opinions ^^

Thanks in advance! 0/

The problem is that beagles are hunting dogs, so your little guinea pigs will definitely be at risk. You’d need a breed that gets on well with other pets – and that’s clearly not a hunting dog. When you say you’re happy to provide plenty of exercise, how many hours a day are we talking about?

Thanks for the quick replies! I wasn't expecting such negative feedback; I’d only heard good things until now and lots of websites recommended them, so I’m a bit surprised... In terms of my lifestyle, I’m currently living with my parents. I usually work in retail, but my last contract ended at the start of January, so I’m taking the opportunity to focus on my driving test and my career plans. My boyfriend and I are planning to move in together by late 2018 or early 2019, and we'll be looking for a little house with a garden. We’ve also got two fairly young guinea pigs. So, that’s my situation. As for the dog itself, an affectionate companion would be my ideal. If it’s an active breed, I’ll make sure it gets as much exercise as possible. The only "issue", so to speak, is that because I’m "imposing" it on my parents, I need to choose a dog that isn’t too big, as I am still living at home for now. I initially thought about getting a Shiba Inu, but I was strongly advised against it as a first dog. I’ve since turned to the Beagle, which was my second favourite.

You’ll need to let us know about your lifestyle and preferences, as well as any future plans, so that people can give you suggestions that actually suit you.

And I can definitely confirm that an adorable beagle would have you at its beck and call for the rest of its life – at your age, it’s really not a great move.

A dog of roughly the same size, which is a great choice for a first-time owner and has a really adorable face in my opinion, is the Shetland Sheepdog. They’re active as well but know how to settle down and they absolutely love a cuddle! Definitely a better candidate than a Beagle, as Lorna rightly pointed out! What sort of qualities are you looking for in a dog?

No, that’s a really bad idea.

You’ll find plenty of threads on here about Beagles and the challenges of keeping them as pets. The main issue was mentioned again just this morning: they’re dogs with a massive need to burn off energy, but they’re almost impossible to let off the lead because they won't come back once they’ve picked up a scent...

The result is you either have a dog that pulls your arm off on the lead (and isn’t particularly happy as a result), or a dog that just bolts off into the countryside and completely ignores you. Unless it’s for a hunter, I wouldn't recommend a Beagle to anyone.
