Do Beagles bark a lot? Can they live in a flat?

Hi everyone,

Would a Beagle be suited to living in a flat, provided they get their regular walks (2-3 times a day)?

Do they bark much? (Very important for keeping the peace with the neighbours! ^^)

I saw a TV programme that said they do... :S

Also, what’s the difference between a Beagle and a Beagle Harrier?

Thanks :)

hi, i've got a beagle and 5 cats in my flat. i only got her a week ago. she lived in a house before and for a few days now she's been crying and scratching at the window. why is that? thanks for your replies

You would have been better off starting your own thread...

A beagle is a dog that needs to be constantly surrounded by a variety of scents, with endless trails to follow; they're a breed best suited to very active owners who have plenty of time to dedicate to them.

Hi everyone, I’ve got a beagle and 5 cats in my flat. I’ve only had her for a week – she used to live in a house, but for the past few days she’s been crying and scratching at the window. Why is she doing this? Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi there, personally I haven't had any issues with my beagle who's turning three at the end of July. We actually had to teach him how to bark because we lived in two different flats in Savoie and he didn't make a peep!! When he saw another dog to play with, he'd bark then, but that was about it! Now we’re in a smaller flat in Alsace (we’re a young couple) so we take him out a lot to stretch his legs ^^ not all beagles are the same after all, it just depends on their temperament, age, etc....

We take her out for an hour’s walk and it suits her just fine, especially with the heat—she gets fed up and just lies down outside. All the beagles I know cope with it really well.

Well, 2 or 3 walks isn't enough because, as has already been mentioned, he's quite an active dog who needs to burn off a lot of energy, and he's a hunting dog after all.

And as for the barking, you've got to teach him not to bark at every little thing.

Mine’s a proper guard dog and does that hunting howl, the famous "ahoouuuuuuuu".

You wouldn't really say that Beagles are known for being big barkers. They’ll give you a heads-up, but that’s about it—they aren't guard dogs. Ours is an ex-lab rescue; we’ve had her for a year now and she’s two years old. We’ve only actually heard her bark twice. She’ll growl if she needs to, but she never barks. At home, she’s a very chilled-out dog, completely silent. On the other hand, she’s very active when we’re out, but still always in silence. If another dog barks at her, she just looks at them and keeps on walking! The Beagle 'bay' is something special; we haven’t heard ours do it yet, but we’ve heard other Beagles doing it on walks. It’s a completely different sound to other dogs.

Hi, I have a beagle and we live in a flat, and he handles it really well as long as we take him out every 2 or 3 hours. Personally, mine doesn’t bark much. As for the difference between the two types of beagles, I couldn't really say.

Right, so Beagles can be quite vocal, but it’s down to you to train them not to bark at every little thing. Whether it’s a puppy or an adult, two or even three walks a day just won’t be enough. They’re hounds, which means they’re very high-energy dogs; you’ve got to make sure they get enough exercise to blow off steam so that they actually settle down once they’re back inside. Any dog can live in a flat, really, as long as you’re taking them out for long enough walks. I can’t really help with the difference between a Beagle and a Beagle Harrier, though.
