A Frengle?

Hello!

I’m looking for some information on Beagle\/French Bulldog crosses, also known as Frengles.

I’m looking to adopt (definitely not buy) a young dog or a puppy, but I’ve got no experience at all as I’ve never had a dog before... My partner, on the other hand, has always had them since he was a kid. He loves Labs and Goldens, whereas I prefer smaller dogs like Jack Russells (Parsons too, even if they’re a bit bigger) and Beagles.
What puts me off Jack Russells is that they’re very active and tend to get into a lot of mischief in general... We both love Beagles, but then a mutual friend introduced us to his puppy: a male Frengle. He’s so cute with his fawn coat and brown eyes... We thought he was absolutely adorable. My friend mentioned that his dog still gets into quite a bit of trouble, licks everyone—even strangers (including babies and kids)—and jumps up on the bed and the sofa. But he did say it’s his own fault because he wasn't firm enough with him right from the start. (He got him when he was two or three months old, and he’s nearly 6 now).

So, I’ve got a few questions:

In terms of personality and behaviour, does a Frengle take more after the Beagle or the Frenchie?
Are they generally quite active or more on the lazy side?
If they’re well-trained, do they still get into a lot of mischief?
Is it better to adopt a puppy (3 or 4 months old) or a younger dog (2 years or even older)?
Is it better to get a male or a female?
Have any of you owned or known a Frengle before?

Since my friend didn’t want me posting a photo of his dog, I’m sharing a picture of a Frengle I found online that looks just like his:

Thanks in advance! ––\/p>

A Frengle... that’s just a marketing gimmick. I’m not going to restart the whole debate; other members on here have already summed up my feelings on these designer crosses... Once you’ve worked out your priorities and what you’re looking for in your new addition, I’d love for you to come and introduce them here—and why not give them their own unique breed name? 😁 A friend of mine had two little dogs that were a Fox Terrier and Poodle cross; they were littermates, but you couldn’t see a single similarity between them. We nicknamed them ‘Fox-oodles’, which was enough to completely baffle any passers-by wondering what those funny little mongrels were!

As Billy said, once you’ve had a think about your lifestyle and what you’re looking for, don’t hesitate to visit a few different rescue centres. Whatever you do, don’t pick a dog out of pity if they don't match your energy levels! It’s so important because, as you mentioned yourself, it’s a commitment for the next twelve years or so. Personally, I visited three different rescues and found my absolute diamond of a dog in the third one. 👌

    Hi there,

    Just for info frengel,

A crossbreed is a dog where you know the breed of at least the father or the mother.

A mongrel is a mix of unknown breeds.

    Hi there

I agree with the comments above: he’s a crossbreed or a mongrel, whichever term you prefer. Exactly like my little Billy, who’s the result of a cross between a Yorkie and a Bichon (??) or a Westie (?)

But it doesn't matter! Since you’re looking to adopt rather than buy (and I really take my hat off to you for that ✌), do what many of us have done: go to a rescue centre with an open mind, but having first thought about your lifestyle and what you’re looking for. Take the time to see the dogs there, chat with the staff, and visit several rescues if you need to. I’m certain you’ll fall head over heels for one of their residents. The breed or mix doesn't matter: the most important thing is finding the dog that’s the right match for you.

Best of luck to you 😁

First of all, you need to define your lifestyle so the staff at the rescue centre can suggest dogs that match your energy levels and availability. I hope you'll keep us posted!

    Right, thanks for your replies.

I’m not specifically looking for a crossbreed or even a pedigree dog. A mongrel would be perfectly fine with me. I mentioned a Frengle—well, a bit of a mixture really—just because I know that lovely little dog.

I’ll have a chat with the people at a rescue centre to find out which breed, and especially which puppy or dog, would suit my partner and me best. I really hope we both fall for the same one... In any case, we’ll give it a massive amount of thought before adopting, as we know full well that a dog is for life and it’s obviously out of the question that we’d ever give them up.

Thanks again to everyone for your replies. :)

"Frengle" definitely comes from "Frenchie" (French Bulldog) plus "Beagle".

It’s a total lottery, and a really, really daft one at that.

A hunting dog that’s a notorious escape artist and incredibly greedy, mixed with a breed prone to health issues and being stubborn as a mule... it’s a complete fluke if you end up with a dog that’s even remotely manageable.

Americans are always coming up with these latest fads, but we’re a nation of dog lovers who wouldn't fall for such ridiculous "designer" mixes.

Since you’re set on a crossbreed, pick one from a rescue centre that isn't such a gamble for health and behavioural issues!

I’m not sure how much he paid for him, actually. I said he adopted him, but I don’t even know if he adopted or bought him... I just know he got him as a puppy in the States and he’s a dog now. :)

Good evening and thanks for your reply.

Right, I didn’t know they were called mongrels. I should mention that my friend who owns the dog is an English speaker and currently lives in the US, where he actually adopted him... so I suppose that must be the English term for a mongrel, I imagine. (His dog gets into mischief but is also often very lazy, spending half the day lounging on the sofa). (And looks-wise, he’s all Beagle and almost nothing like a Bulldog). Anyway, as I said, I definitely want to adopt rather than buy; I was planning on going to my local RSPCA, but a small rescue centre would be fine too.

I should point out that while I’d like a puppy or a cute dog, it’s not just about looks for me – the dog's temperament and behaviour matter too. (A playful dog who also knows how to be calm and, above all, an affectionate one). At the end of the day, I don't care if it's a crossbreed or a pedigree. ;)

    Have a lovely evening! :)

I'm with Kikaah on this... I'd much rather have a proper mongrel than these so-called 'new breeds'! What was that one from last week again?
