My dog's eaten chocolate :(

Hi everyone, Prince (an Australian Shepherd, about 50 lbs) has eaten half a Kinder Surprise :/ Is there anything I should do before he sees the vet? Has anyone else ever dealt with this before? The vet said that if he isn't vomiting or drooling it isn't an emergency... he's got an appointment with the vet at 4.30 pm.

The dangerous part is that... what’s it called... toxic molecule for dogs found in cocoa. The more diluted the cocoa is, the lower the risk. So with Kinder chocolate... like @misanthrope said, they’d need to eat quite a few for it to be toxic. To make a dog sick, a spoonful of fine salt at the back of the throat is very effective and less risky than hydrogen peroxide and water, where it’s easy to get the measurements wrong. But you have to be certain before making your dog vomit. If you actually see them swallow a bar of dark chocolate, then yes. But if you’re only guessing that they might have swallowed something, it’s much better to ring the vet before you do anything.

One of the vet's receptionists finally called back; she said that Kinder Surprises have hardly any cocoa in them and that at worst he might just have a bit of an upset tummy, but nothing else 🙂 so the appointment's been cancelled 😯 Well, all's well that ends well for Prince ;)

Thanks Misanthope :) it’s reassuring to see that he’s nowhere near being poisoned 🙂

Here’s a link that should put your mind completely at rest! Don’t worry, your dog will be absolutely fine even if he’d scoffed 4 or 5 Kinders!

I’m with everyone else on this: I don’t think he’ll get poisoned, it’s not a huge amount and the shell of a Kinder Surprise is quite thin :)

Keep an eye on him just in case

Okay, thanks for your help :) the vet also said it wasn't anything too serious and to only head in late this afternoon if he starts being sick, drooling or anything like that. He’s alright for now 😐 I’m going to keep an eye on him until the vet appointment; he doesn’t seem poorly at the moment.

Don't panic, there’s more sugar than cocoa in a Kinder anyway. If he starts shaking, vomiting, or seems lethargic before 4 pm, take him to the emergency vet, but otherwise there’s no need to worry :)

Yes, your vet's right, don't panic. He's almost certainly only swallowed a tiny bit.

But go to the vet at 4.30 pm anyway just to get him checked over, but it's normally nothing serious :)

Keep us updated on here after the visit ;)
