My 2-month-old puppy is eating very little

Hello,

We've just adopted a little 2-month-old Australian Shepherd puppy.

We bought the same brand the breeder was using (Eukanuba),

but my puppy isn't eating much at all.

I've tried mixing in a bit of chicken but he just picks through it. I also tried soaking the dry food with some water, but still nothing.

What should I do?

Thanks for your help.

How long have you had him?

Eukanuba don’t necessarily have the best reputation, but before you switch his food, you really need to give the puppy some time to settle into his new home and get used to his new family...

Hi, I’m having the exact same problem with the same brand of dry food for my 2-month-old Golden (he’s also about 13 lbs). His stools haven’t been looking great either—he’s had diarrhoea since yesterday—but he seems to be staying hydrated. How did things turn out for your pup in the end?

Yeah, no strenuous exercise until they've finished growing; just short walks several times a day.

    What a beauty! 👌

    Hi there

It's my 12-year-old daughter—she's going to keep on at me ^^ to get her an Aussie; she shows me gorgeous puppies on YouTube every day... we're thinking of looking for a companion for our Lab this summer...

Yes, while they're still growing, it's definitely safer to avoid stairs and jumping...

and keep the walks on the shorter side...

I'll be back on the forum this afternoon...

    See you then

Does anyone have any questions about BARF?

Who’s going to give you a hard time?

I’d read that you shouldn’t let them jump as it’s risky for their bones.

Australian Shepherds are a bit dramatic (just ask the vets!) and aren’t exactly fans of change when it comes to their food. It’s not a huge deal (except when trying to give them medication, as they see through all our tricks), they won’t let themselves starve regardless. But if you have to choose between too little and too much, always go for too little—being even slightly overweight is always a disaster for their health in the long run.

Ah, I know a certain 12-year-old who’s going to be pestering me for an Aussie of her own... 😁 Oslo is gorgeous! Such a lovely little angel face... thank you. It's also worth knowing that Australian Shepherds can sometimes be slow eaters (or even a bit picky). That’s the case with Olbia – she's a clever one and really caught her owner out... she turns her nose up at her veg! And when they’re puppies, you really have to be careful with them jumping while they’re still growing!! They’re proper little live wires... Olbia had to have quite a big operation because of fractures she got just from playing. Give Oslo some big cuddles from me. Goodnight, is he a calm one?

Like @Aggie 19 said, he’s a bit out of sorts...

He hasn't been with you for enough days yet to be having raw meat...

It could give him diarrhoea... (In a good week’s time, once he’s settled into your home, little bits of raw poultry as treats or with his meals will be a real treat... or even better, if you can have a read up on the BARF diet... definitely look into it for him...)

Instead of the meat, try putting some organic coconut oil on his dry food instead... (available in supermarkets and health food shops...) half a teaspoon, and it’s also great for your own cooking too, it's excellent stuff...

As @Petyrlechon suggested, soaking the food is a great idea...

As for the weight of the dry food, I really couldn't say, having had three dogs on the BARF diet...

On the BARF forum, there are two stunning Australian Shepherds, an adult and a puppy... Olbia and Harry...

My Lab, Oxane, started at two months old... you can see her on my Pinterest link, on the BARF forum, or right here on the site...

Give your pup some cuddles from me

    🙂
