Hi everyone,

My little Chihuahua is a very fussy eater. She used to have a companion who passed away, and back then there weren't any issues as the bit of healthy competition at meal times kept her interested. Now she won't touch dry food or pretty much any commercial pet food. She eventually eats some wet food from time to time, and I leave some dry food out for her to graze on. Otherwise, it's ham or meat, and she won't eat the same thing every day. I tried being firm by leaving her without food for a day, and she did end up nibbling some wet food the next day. I should mention she's in good health and has weighed about 5.7 lbs for years. Does anyone have any advice? Thanks.

    Watch out for them being picky. I see it with my own dogs – as soon as I mention chicken or show them some, they turn their noses up at everything else.

    Because they aren't the ones in charge. As long as it isn't a medical issue, a dog will eat what it’s given. Their upbringing is supposed to be based on a varied and balanced diet. That’s my policy!

    I’d suggest making his meals yourself. It doesn’t take much more time if you’re properly organised. I do it!

    Mind you, I admit that since it’s a tiny dog, it might not be worth the effort of cooking.

    Before you change anything, I’d recommend a check-up with the vet for some blood tests. There might be another underlying issue. Any constipation? Are all the other vital signs okay? No changes in behaviour or anything else?

    If your dog won't accept commercial food, I would suggest consulting your vet, or even a veterinary nutritionist, to set up a home-cooked diet. You could also try adding some salmon oil to the food to make it more palatable.
