Hi everyone,
Just to give you an update, I went to see my vet to find out more because this lump was getting bigger. He did a needle sample and found it was a skin cyst, caused by the ridge which traps dirt and debris (it hadn't closed up properly when he was a puppy). You have to be really careful as some cysts can be cancerous. After testing, cancer was ruled out, but we have to keep an eye on him to make sure they don't keep coming back. The vet put him on antibiotics for 10 days and the lump has now gone. The vet said that if the antibiotics hadn't worked, he would have had to operate under general anaesthetic to remove the cyst, which apparently takes a long time to heal.
So, if any of you notice this kind of thing with your dog, make sure to see a vet to get it seen to.
I hope that's helpful. Feel free to ask if you'd like any more info.
Best wishes,

Thanks so much for your reply. It’s true that my Australian Shepherd has put on about 2 lbs over the last year, so you might have found the explanation. However, the lump on his head is still about the size of a cherry... I just hope it doesn't get any bigger. Thanks again.

I’ve noticed that with my Aussie too, he’s got a sort of "ridge" in that spot. I suppose it’s just a breed trait. I imagine you can feel it more or less depending on whether the dog puts on or loses weight?
