Torn paw pad (or nearly!) - Urgent

Evening everyone,

I went to the vet yesterday because my Toumaï was licking his paw and wouldn't put any weight on it, etc.

Anyway, it turns out he had a grazed pad, so he's on anti-inflammatories and antibiotics, with an ointment and some long-term treatment.

I've just gone to put his ointment on and I can feel it coming loose! I had a look and a massive chunk of his pad is actually coming away! A large part is still attached but I really don't like the look of it!

I haven't got any bandages or anything! I'm calling the vet first thing tomorrow morning, but what should I do for tonight? Should I put a sock on him or something like that? I'm worried about it getting infected with the heat and everything.

Thanks.

Hi, I’d recommend getting some crushed green clay from the chemist. If you make a poultice, it’ll stop any infection, help the skin heal, and really soothe your pet. The ointments from the vet are all well and good, but they don't provide much relief, whereas clay works wonders. I managed to heal a really deep wound on one of my dogs in just a week—it’s incredibly quick and effective. I can give you some tips on how to apply it if you’re interested.

Could you tell me the names of any anti-inflammatory or antibiotic creams I can buy to treat my dog please?

Hi everyone, I have a Brittany Spaniel and on Sunday we went out into the hills to let her burn off some steam. We were walking for about 6 hours; I’d brought water for her and kept her cool by wetting her down, but by the time we got home, she couldn't walk. At first, I thought she just had cramps, but when I checked her the next day, I saw she’s got raw sores on three of her paw pads, and on the last paw, the pad is literally hanging by a thread. I’m disinfecting them with some antiseptic, but what else can I do to help her heal faster?

I'm not surprised, Oc. The vet told me that Amstaffs aren't exactly "delicate" dogs lol and even when they’re in pain, they still charge ahead like absolute tanks :) Well, seeing as your pooches had either stitches or staples, I reckon Toumaï got lucky! Cheers ;)

Mine had exactly the same thing! The vet tried to stick it back together with a sort of glue but it just wouldn't hold, so it was staples and antibiotics :-/

Wishing your little one a speedy recovery :)

    Ah, okay :)

Haha, too much power in those little paws ^_^ I hope your pooch is going to be alright :/

Yes Buzz, same here – another two days on antibiotics and anti-inflammatories. He’s doing much better, I’m so pleased; he’s putting his paw flat on the ground again, not just on his claws :) He’s hardly licking it anymore... I’m so happy! Thanks ;)

I had this issue with my Boxer, it looks exactly the same and the vet prescribed him some antibiotics...

    Good luck...

Actually, the Betadine soaks were just to disinfect the wound. Then on Friday evening, he was so excited to see my husband getting home from work that he went charging towards him, couldn't stop in time, and—bang—straight into the iron gate! So the wound has split open again, ugh!

Yes! I’d bought some because when I first got him from the RSPCA his pads were really red :/

So I’ve now got an anti-inflammatory ointment with antibiotics to stop it getting infected or weeping, and for ongoing care, the vet told me to keep using the cream I’d already bought regularly. I took it in to show her and she said it was fine :)

Oh no, your poor little lad! :s Stitches and everything. The vet told me to be really careful this winter with the snow and the grit. I think he’ll be wearing booties this winter...

And do the baths seem to help him?

One of his paw pads is still quite fragile and keeps getting re-injured (superficially) on a regular basis! So it’s paw soaks with some iodine, followed by some antiseptic and a bit of healing ointment.
