Female dog in season and grooming

Evening all!

My 8-month-old girl started her first season about a week ago. She isn't bleeding much (just a few spots a day), but I'm starting to feel like she really needs a bath, especially as she has a white coat.

I read on a forum that it's better not to wash them during this time because of the risk of infection, so I’d love some confirmation on that. I'm worried her coat might get permanently stained, and she’s also smelling a bit (it's a bit off-putting when we're playing ^^').

Also, if you have any other tips for me, I’m all ears, as she's my first ever female dog.

I've heard that you should avoid bathing a ***** when she's in season to prevent infections; the same goes for letting them swim outdoors in ponds or other bodies of water.

It's been a week now and I'm still finding a few spots on the floor as usual. I'm not even taking her out at the moment because I'm worried about male dogs trying to get to her. I'm thinking of having her spayed afterwards, but I've been told it's better to wait until after her first season.

    Thanks for your advice, Jador

When you say a week, do you mean she started her season a week ago or that it finished a week ago? If it’s the first scenario, I’m not sure about the risk of infection—I’ve bathed my own girls before without any issues—but I suppose it’s possible since the vulva is swollen and the membranes are more exposed. However, as a season usually lasts about three weeks, you’d only end up having to wash her again anyway, so it’s probably best to wait. If this is your first *****, were you aware that she’ll be most fertile during the second half of her cycle (roughly from day 14 to day 21)? Do be very careful that she doesn't get away from you and that you don't get pestered by other dogs during walks.

I've just spotted this on another site too: "Avoid bathing her until she completely stops discharging. That way you can figure her cervix is closed again, and she'll be less likely to develop a vaginal/uterine infection from the bathwater." --> http://dogs.lovetoknow.com/wiki/Female_Dog_Heat_Cycle

I’ve got no issues as far as my house is concerned; she’s grooming herself, but the colour and the smell are clinging to her fur around her tail and vulva. I was a bit worried about whether it was okay to leave her like that without a bath, but I don’t think it’ll be a problem. I’m still waiting for a second opinion, though.

    Thanks @Stellaieux

Hi there, personally I’ve never seen or read anywhere that you shouldn’t wash them because of infection risks, but who knows... In any case, you don’t actually need to wash her since she’s supposed to groom herself. Obviously, if she isn’t cleaning herself all day there might be a bit of a smell, but that’s normal. You’ll just have to air the place out a bit! ^^
