My neutered male is trying to mate with my spayed female

Hi everyone, I’m at my wits' end. I had a few suspicions, but I’ve just seen him in the act – my male cat is trying to mate with my female, even though they’ve both been fixed!! My boy was neutered a year ago and my girl was spayed over 4 months ago. Is it even possible for male cats to do this? To be fair, I haven’t seen them actually 'doing the deed' or anything, but he tries to lick her bum whenever she gets too close, and just now he started grooming her and then bit her neck. It really looked like he was trying to mount her, but she never lets him, so I'm not sure what his actual intentions are. Could it be that he doesn’t know how to behave with other cats, given the only ones he's ever known are my female and her mum?

My boy was neutered, but he still used to do that with my female cat, even though she was spayed too. I think with some cats, the instinct is just still there. I used to just let them get on with it and only stepped in when my girl started to get fed up. Good luck.

I have a boy who was neutered at 6 months and he behaved like this for months – and it definitely wasn't just play. He was marking his territory, too. I stopped letting him into the house for a while; he stayed in the garage and the loft, which are both well kitted out for the cats. But since it’s been so cold lately, I tried bringing him back inside into the warm and... it’s a miracle! He’s stopped peeing everywhere and all he wants to do is play now, which I’m absolutely delighted about. I'd mentioned it to the vet because I was so frustrated that a neutered cat would act like that. He told me that the adrenal glands can still produce sex hormones in some cats, which would explain that kind of behaviour.

    Hello,

As long as you are absolutely certain that your pets have been neutered, there definitely shouldn’t be any kittens, which is good news. It is possible that if your male cat was neutered later in life, he may have retained some 'entire male' behaviours. Your female shouldn't really allow mounting, as cats usually only do that when they are in season.

Keep a close eye on them and try to see if it’s just play or actually sexual behaviour; if it persists, it might be worth mentioning it to your vet.
