Why do cats smell so lovely?

Does anyone know why cats smell so good? Sure, they spend ages grooming themselves, but if we did the same – I mean, washing ourselves by licking – I doubt we’d smell half as nice... I reckon they must have something in their saliva, like a natural self-cleaning detergent? ;) Dogs lick themselves too but they have a very strong scent (which personally bothers me, and is one of a thousand reasons why I prefer cats). A healthy cat smells of themselves and their home ("smell my cat and you'll know if I'm clean", lol). When Félia has been sleeping on my freshly washed duvet, she smells like washing powder! So, what do you think? Does anyone have an explanation for that famous natural cat smell? <\/p>

Mind you, I have to admit Félia does sometimes end up smelling of onions, seeing as I love onion omelettes... lol

It’s no joke, when that happens, she smells of cheese or stale grease... Waaah.

Yeah, cats' fur really does soak up smells. The trouble is, after a meat fondue or a raclette, my Ném doesn't smell particularly fresh... ;-(

Do you put perfume on some of your cats, Francesca? If you don't mind me asking, why?

It’s a secret weapon for seduction, Ninie! :)) But seriously, about the perfume thing – before I moved, my old neighbours’ kitten used to come over and play with Félia quite a bit (actually, I’d forgotten that, which makes me feel even more reassured about them accepting Gatsby :) ). My neighbour always knew where he'd been because her cat would end up smelling of my perfume! Cats really are scent chameleons!

I think Némésis smells lovely too (and I completely agree with you, @Euqi, about dogs), especially after a snooze in the sun. Same here, she often smells of my perfume or my partner’s after we've given her a cuddle—mind you, we don’t actually perfume her! ^^ I’ve no idea why they smell so good, though. Maybe it’s a way of winning us over? lol
