Why do cats smell so lovely?

Does anyone know why cats smell so good? Sure, they spend ages grooming themselves, but if we did the same – I mean, washing ourselves by licking – I doubt we’d smell half as nice... I reckon they must have something in their saliva, like a natural self-cleaning detergent? ;) Dogs lick themselves too but they have a very strong scent (which personally bothers me, and is one of a thousand reasons why I prefer cats). A healthy cat smells of themselves and their home ("smell my cat and you'll know if I'm clean", lol). When Félia has been sleeping on my freshly washed duvet, she smells like washing powder! So, what do you think? Does anyone have an explanation for that famous natural cat smell? <\/p>

LOL @NiniMichel, definitely in that case! ;)) I just meant that cats naturally smell nice, especially compared to dogs or ferrets who have strong body odours that aren't always the most pleasant.

That used to happen to my Félia when she was a kitten and I wasn't brushing her enough; she’d get mats in her fur around her bum and on her back legs. She really didn't like having her bottom cleaned, either! ;)

Personally, I also think they pick up the smells around them, because when my Luna and Pimousse smell of dry food, I know exactly where they’ve been ^^ It’s the same with the litter; after a "poo", I actually love their lavender-scented litter smell :) It smells lovely... Otherwise, yeah, generally cats always smell nice, except for that one time Pimousse... had a bit of poo stuck to him ^^ Blimey, what a pong!! :) I had to clean the poor little thing up, and he wasn’t best pleased, I can tell you :D Sorry for the TMI, but it just goes to show that cats don’t always smell great.. LOL

I know, she’s an absolute sweetheart, my girl! She’s a total hit at the vet’s; the two assistants are constantly fussing over her. Mind you, she doesn't twitch a whisker and just stares at them with those big pleading eyes as if to say, "You won't hurt me, will you?"

Fair enough then :( lol I've no idea if mine does that as well ^^ But I don't have any trouble with Réglisse, and anyway, he’s "famous" at the vet's -_-' A bit *too* famous... Every time she sees me it’s, "Ah, the black and white cat, THAT cat! Hey (calling her assistant over), do you remember... what was his name again? Réglisse! You know, the one who had that fungal infection after he was neutered!" The assistant goes, "Oh yeah, he was a real handful, that one; definitely one for the history books!" And there's me, just wanting the ground to swallow me up lol. Especially when I’m just there to pick up some Feliway XD You’re lucky with your Félia!

No way! We’re tackling it together! Honestly... ;) I’m not sure if it’s standard practice or just certain vets, but mine doesn’t charge for help with grooming or nail clipping. Mind you, he doesn’t do it himself; it’s one of the vet nurses. I imagine he’d start moaning if we turned up every month, but with the way my little terror reacts to the carrier, there’s no danger of that! ;)
