Why do cats smell so lovely?

Does anyone know why cats smell so good? Sure, they spend ages grooming themselves, but if we did the same – I mean, washing ourselves by licking – I doubt we’d smell half as nice... I reckon they must have something in their saliva, like a natural self-cleaning detergent? ;) Dogs lick themselves too but they have a very strong scent (which personally bothers me, and is one of a thousand reasons why I prefer cats). A healthy cat smells of themselves and their home ("smell my cat and you'll know if I'm clean", lol). When Félia has been sleeping on my freshly washed duvet, she smells like washing powder! So, what do you think? Does anyone have an explanation for that famous natural cat smell? <\/p>

It’s the complete opposite here with my little four-and-a-half-month-old kitten, but I just can’t figure out where the bad smell is coming from. She lives in a flat and doesn’t go out, I don’t have any other pets, everything is kept clean and she grooms herself properly, but there’s still a smell... I don’t know if it’s because she might be teething, as she’s at that age and is drooling loads, or if it’s coming from her back end... She saw the vet less than a month ago (and I’m seeing them again on Monday)... I really don’t understand it...

I’ve just lost my kitten who smelled absolutely heavenly! A real baby smell... I spent all my time sniffing the back of his neck and he loved it! It was like a game; in return, he’d sniff my eyes... I miss him so much, I miss his scent... my big cat smells lovely too, but not like a baby.

I don't notice anything in particular, except for my Persians which I put perfume on. You shouldn't use perfume on your cats because they'll end up licking it off. That means the perfume gets into their saliva and could make them ill! Please be careful.

My cat smells really lovely, like perfume (sort of high-end L’Oréal vibes). It doesn’t seem like a natural scent at all, and no one in my family wears a perfume that smells anything like him. It’s so weird; maybe my cat is just one of a kind! :) He smells different every day, unlike my other cat who always smells like woodsmoke.

Isyl smells a bit like baby lotion too, it’s crazy! I love burying my nose in her neck when she wants cuddles; she loves it and purrs away even more! I just love her silky fur and that lovely scent of hers.

I’ve got some pet perfume that I bought from a specialist site, but I only used it once to see what it was like. It doesn’t smell bad, but I much prefer my girl's natural scent :)

    Hi everyone,

I’ve had loads of cats and dogs since I was a kid (as I’m a huge animal lover), but I still don’t understand why cats always smell so good—even though I never wash them or use any scents—whereas most dogs smell so bad, even when you wash them regularly.

My cats are obsessed with being clean; they’re always grooming themselves and they always smell lovely, while my dogs love rolling in anything stinky (like a rotting fish by a river). Even if I give them a bath, their coats smell terrible again by the very next day!

Is there a scientific explanation for why cats smell nice and dogs smell bad? Could a scientist or a vet explain it to me?

I've no idea, honestly, even though they hardly ever eat the stuff!! I gave Biloute a sniff once and he smelled of tuna, so I sniffed Moukil and he was exactly the same (those two are always grooming each other, they’re head over heels)!

Lol, I thought I was the only one who thought my cat smells amazing, but it turns out Euqi had already made a post and everyone seems to agree – our cats smell so good. I love burying my nose in their fur too; it's such a delicious and mysterious "cat smell" :)))
