Semi-long or short coat?

Hi everyone!

I've been the happy owner of this cute Maine Coon kitten (fully registered pedigree) since the start of March, but I've got a few questions about his coat.

The sire and dam are, of course, 100% purebred and registered.

He was part of a planned litter of 6 kittens (long-haired cream/red and brown/black silver), but only the two red males have a shorter coat than the others. I should mention that the breeder took every precaution with this litter.

Here are a few photos from when he was 2 months old to 3 and a half months old.

I'd love to get your opinion! :)

Semi-long or short coat?

2 months old

3 and a half months old

Hi Folior :) I’d recommend checking out some of the Maine Coon UK groups on Facebook if you want to get some advice from other owners and breeders :) Personally, what stands out to me most is her little face; she doesn't really have that typical Maine Coon look at all. Did she come from a breeder or a private seller? Mind you, she’s still very tiny, so she’s got plenty of time to change :) As for her coat, it’ll definitely grow out. She might not end up being the fluffiest of Coons, but she won't stay like that :) Maine Coons don’t actually have an undercoat, by the way. Their fur is sleek, soft, and silky, but it does tend to get knotted, so make sure you get her used to being brushed while she’s still a kitten :)

Hi, he’s gorgeous. We’re right in the middle of moulting season for Coons and he’s still very young, so it’s only natural the big lad looks a bit ‘scruffy’ at the moment. But come next winter, you’ll have fur everywhere!

It’s a breed that takes a lot of work physically, but I never realised that some Maine Coons could have such short coats :O. It can’t be very common, even though your little girl went through the same thing. I can’t wait to see how my boy develops :)

When my Maine Coon was a kitten, her fur was actually quite short, but as an adult, she had an incredible coat and undercoat! I also had her spayed before her hormones kicked in, so that made it even better :)

This kitten is absolutely precious, and just look at those ears! As for his coat, he’s still very young so it’ll definitely grow in. Long-haired cats don’t usually get their proper adult coat until they’re fully grown. You’ll notice his fur will look much thicker and fluffier this winter; it’s always a bit shorter and thinner during the summer months.

Here are some more photos to give you a better idea of his coat :)

Oh, and he currently weighs about 5 lbs at 3 months and 21 days old.
