Hi everyone, I’m starting to feel a bit desperate with my 5-year-old Maine Coon girl. For about a month now, she’s had soft stools. I took her to the vet who gave her a check-up and found her to be in good health, just a bit on the thin side (she usually weighs a good 13 lbs 3 oz and is currently down to about 12 lbs 2 oz). She hasn't got a temperature, no tummy pain, she's been wormed and finished a 10-day course of probiotics. Initially, the treatment didn’t really have much effect; it was only after a week that her stools started looking more normal. However, as soon as the course finished, the problem came back. She was going four times a day and was quite gassy. There's no blood in her stools. I called her breeder last week for some advice; they mentioned the same thing happened with another Maine Coon and that Hill’s dry food had sorted it out, and that probiotics were effective. Wanting her to get better as soon as possible, I went out to buy some dry food that might suit her better. She’s been on Orijen for a long time, but she doesn’t actually eat many biscuits—she has a lot of Bubimex and Schesir wet food. For nearly a week now, I’ve been gradually switching her over to 'Protect' digestive care dry food. Her stools are still soft for now, but she’s going less often—down from four times a day to twice. It’s quite hard to get her to eat dry food because she just picks at it, but she’s constantly begging for wet food! I’m trying to get her to eat the biscuits by soaking them and mixing in a bit of wet food, which works, but she only nibbles a little bit at a time. Plus, the heat isn't helping matters... Since the issue hasn’t really cleared up and her stools are still soft, I’m planning on giving her another course of probiotics. What worries me most is her weight being so low. She’s stuck at around 12 lbs 2 oz, sometimes 11 lbs 14 oz (never below that), and occasionally between 12 lbs 5 oz and 12 lbs 12 oz. She’s always been quite slight. In your opinion, if it is a dietary issue, should the dry food have fixed it after just a few days? Has anyone else experienced this with their Maine Coons? \/p>

I’m checking back in with an update on my little Maine Coon. I took her to a different vet who did a really thorough check-up. It turns out she does have some bad bacteria in her gut as well as some bowel inflammation (one might have caused the other, but it’s hard to say). She’s had an anti-inflammatory injection, some probiotics, antibiotics, and some special hypoallergenic dry food. I hope that by sharing what’s happened with my Maine Coon, it might help anyone else who isn’t sure how to read these symptoms, which don't seem all that serious at first.
Thanks for your replies and advice. I’m really hoping my little girl makes a full recovery soon.

It might be due to intestinal parasites. A trip to the vet is probably your best bet for now.

Hi there,
Thanks for your reply. I am indeed planning on taking her back to the vet for some more in-depth tests if the problem persists. However, I’m waiting a little longer to see if her new dry food makes a difference. I'm also waiting for this hot spell to pass before I take her, as the car journey is quite an ordeal for her at the best of times (she’s a very anxious girl) and her vet is quite a way away... She’s drinking plenty of water. I check several times a day that she has fresh, clean water in a few different spots, and she loves playing with it too. Plus, I soak her dry food with water and then mix it with her wet food. I really hope it's nothing serious and just a minor dietary issue...
Thanks again for your reply.

Hi there,
Maybe you could try going back to your vet to get a more definitive diagnosis?
A longer course of probiotics might also help with those runny stools.
Make sure your cat is drinking plenty of water in this heat, especially with the diarrhoea! Don't hesitate to give them some wet food to help keep them hydrated if necessary.
Best of luck,
Laurine
