Hi everyone, I’d like some advice please. It’s a bit of a delicate subject but basically, I’m having a bit of a hairy problem with my fur baby. When he goes to the litter tray, he gets a bit of poo stuck to his fur. I tried to clean it off yesterday because he’s usually fine with water, but he really didn't like it. So then I tried to trim the fur around his bum, but he wasn't having any of it—he even growled, even though he's usually the sweetest thing. I was wondering if this has happened to anyone else and if you have any tips or tricks for trimming his fur? Grrr, he's so gorgeous, I don't want him stinking the place out lol!
Thanks!

Lol thaaanks for all the advice, you're right I'm on my own so it's really tough, even though he's lovely he just doesn't like it. I'm feeding him Purina One Kitten but I'm mixing it with Purina One Adult Sterilised because I've also got a Birman and they keep eating out of each other's bowls so it's a real nightmare!!! I'm going to check with my vet, I've only just moved and I need to get him neutered!!
Could it be the Purina One making his stools soft? Because he didn't have that before!! I always put milk in with their dry food, is that bad?
Hi, some advice: don't give them Purina dry food, it's poison for cats as they're carnivores. That nasty stuff contains grains that wreck their kidneys and can make them diabetic. You need grain-free dry food; it's pricier but nothing's too much for our fur babies! As for the milk, it's no good, way too high in growth hormones!
lol thanks so much for all the advice. Honestly, I’m on my own so it’s a real struggle – even though he’s lovely, he’s just not a fan. I give him Purina One kitten food but I mix it with Purina One adult sterilised because I’ve also got a Birman and they both keep eating out of each other's bowls, so I'm at a bit of a loss!!! I’ll have a word with my vet, I’ve only just moved house and I still need to get him neutered!!
Could it be the Purina One that's making his stools soft? He never used to have that before!! I always put milk in with their dry food, is that bad?
My Mirabelle is a Maine Coon and she’s very clean – well, for the time being anyway, no mess on her little bum, phew!!!! She’s eight months old now, the cheeky thing. I adore her. Your fur babies are adorable!!
Pinks, you always crack me up with your "clumsy" lot; getting the fur from their ruff stuck in their mouth, that really takes some doing! Lol
Tresor, your little sweethearts are absolutely gorgeous!
Yes, definitely avoid cow's milk as most cats can't digest lactose, so it leads to diarrhoea or loose stools. Fermented dairy is fine (like plain yoghurt, quark or plain fromage frais), but as for actual milk, no, it's best to steer clear.
Purina dry food isn’t actually that great; it’s cheap enough, but it’s definitely not a premium brand... I’d switch if I were you...
- milk: I never give mine any. Some cats just can’t tolerate it and end up with really loose stools or even diarrhoea... that might be the case with your cat...
Just give them a good quality dry food and nothing else: Almo Nature or Hill's (have a look on Zooplus).
Check out this site, it’s a comparison chart for different cat foods:
Haha, thanks for all the tips! As I'm on my own, it’s definitely a bit of a struggle; even though he’s a sweetheart, he’s just not a fan. I’m currently giving him Purina One kitten food, but I’ve been mixing it with Purina One adult neutered cat food because I also have a Birman and they keep eating out of each other’s bowls, so I’m in a bit of a fix! I’ll check it with my vet. I’ve only just moved, and I really need to get him neutered!
Could it be the Purina One that’s making his stools a bit soft? He didn't have this issue before. I also always put some milk in with their dry food—is that a bad thing?
I had that issue with Guizmo too, with poo getting stuck to his fur, but unlike yours, my lot are completely chilled out and let me do whatever, so I have no trouble trimming the messy bits around their bums. Since they love being brushed, I use the Furminator on Guizmo’s "breeches" to really thin out the fur there. I do the same for his ruff (well, his bib), because the clumsy thing is always getting fur stuck in his mouth when he’s grooming himself. If anyone has a miracle solution to stop his ruff getting caught in his mouth, I’m all ears—the Furminator is good, but it’s not magic yet!
The Hill's was giving Flemming quite loose stools... and every time he came into the kitchen... a certain "fragrance" would fill the air... he was rumbled straight away... I've switched his dry food and the problem's gone... but now I'm tempted to give Almo Nature a go!!!
