Where do you dispose of your cat's waste?

HELLO everyone,

I'd like to know how you deal with your cat's waste – where exactly do you bin it?

I know you can get specific litter disposal bins, but I've never used one myself.

I usually flush it down the loo, but since there are always a few bits of litter (mineral type) stuck to it, I’d like to find somewhere else to put it. It starts to smell pretty bad if I just put it in the normal kitchen bin. Do you think putting it in dog poo bags before binning it would help keep the smell down?

I'm worried that it might eventually block the pipes, even if it's just a few grains stuck to the poo. I've already had a bit of a nightmare; I’m a tenant and the drain in the alleyway got blocked once. Naturally, the landlord claimed it was due to cat litter (or wet wipes), but I'm a bit sceptical. I think he's just talking rubbish to avoid paying for repairs because he says he'll charge me for the plumber's fees if it happens again.

To answer the question about the smell and the risk of attracting insects, I don't have any issues like that here. The white bag I leave on the balcony is folded over properly so it doesn't attract flies. To be honest, even in the height of summer, it's not a problem. And let's not get carried away—it’s not exactly lion poo! 😁

    Hi everyone,

Personally, I use Tigerino clumping litter. I scoop out the clumps and the poo and put them in a black plastic bag (like the dog poo bags you get in parks, for example), and once it’s full, I tie it up and throw it in the bin. I haven't had any issues with smells in the bin so far.

Yeah, that’s a good idea and worth looking into, as I don’t have loads of room to add another bin in the kitchen where the extractor fan is strongest. I’ll see if it’s doable, thanks for the idea.

I’ve used that litter before; it works well and is handy being flushable down the loo, but it does track a bit. Have a lovely day.

You can use baby nappy bins to help keep the nasty smells at bay. Personally, I use biodegradable flushable litter and just put the waste straight down the loo. I’m always careful to shake the scoop first so I don’t tip too much into the bowl at once; that way, it doesn't get blocked.

HI, thanks for all your replies and ideas. I’ve also thought about getting some dog poo bags to tie up the waste; I think I’ll go with that idea and just put the bags in the general waste bin. I already put the urine clumps in the normal bin and it’s fine, it doesn’t smell too much. I’ve only recently started using this; before that, I had non-clumping litter, so the poo went down the loo and I’d empty and clean the tray once a week. I’ve found a clumping litter that isn’t dusty, which is exactly what I need for my own health as well as the cats’. I’ve already tried clumping plant-based litter that can be flushed (the packaging says you can), I can’t remember the brand, but the plant-based ones are so light that they seemed to get everywhere on the floor. I used Catsan for a very long time; it absorbs well but it was too dusty for me (even if it’s much better than the budget brands). I’ve tried so many; the tofu one is good but my cat ate it. Wood pellets work well but they get all over the place. I’m now using 99.9% dust-free bentonite clumping litter and it’s ideal when you have respiratory problems. Also, there was a blockage in the pipes in my building and everything leaked into the first-floor flat, so the place had to be evacuated and completely renovated. I’ve put some coffee grounds in the bin—I found that tip online to help mask the smell a bit when you open the lid. I’m not sure if it’ll work for long. Have a good day.

I scoop the waste out of the tray every day into a small bucket (it's clumping litter) and after a week, the contents of the bucket go into a bin bag which then goes into the communal bins.

I scoop up whatever’s there 2 or 3 times a day, put it in a small bag (which I get from a discount shop like Poundland), tie a knot and it goes straight into the normal bin under the sink. Sometimes there's a bit of a smell, but only when the bin is opened, and in that case, I just take the rubbish out.

Hi, I use small plastic bags (like bathroom bin liners) when I do the evening litter tray clear-out. When I lived in a flat, I used to tie them up tightly straight away and put them in my lidded bin. Then every two or three days, I’d put the big bag into the main wheelie bin. Now I’m in a house, I do the same thing, except I’ve now got a dedicated lidded bin for the small litter bags, and my outside bin is much easier to get to. I’ve never had any issues with smells or flies. Just so you know, I use plant-based litter, and I find it doesn't smell nearly as strong as the mineral stuff.
