Vulval discharge, female cat in season

Hi everyone,

My cat is a female, about 7 months old, and she's currently going through her first season.

I've noticed a small amount of clear, odourless fluid leaking from her vulva. She was also sick this morning and has urinated outside her litter tray twice, which has never happened before.

However, she doesn't seem lethargic; she's actually quite preoccupied by being in season (yowling, rubbing against the floor, raising her rear, etc.). I don't think she has a temperature, but I'm not sure how to check. I don't get the impression that her appetite or water intake has dropped either, though it's hard to tell for sure.

Is this normal? Could it be vaginitis, metritis, or pyometra? Or something else entirely?

Thanks in advance for your replies.

Best regards,

Mahèle

Hi, You posted this a few years ago but my cat is showing exactly the same symptoms, apart from the vomiting. Was it an infection or was it "normal"?

Thanks for your replies. I've managed to get a vet appointment!

Yes, my cat is going to be spayed as soon as she’s finished her season (the vet can't operate while she’s in heat).

    Vet!

    That discharge isn’t normal.

You really should have her spayed; being in season is miserable for her, and spaying reduces the risk of her getting mammary tumours.

Hi there, Your cat is well over the age to be spayed. This procedure offers nothing but benefits for her. No more stressful heat cycles, better health, a longer life, and it prevents mammary tumours. She’ll also be calmer, cleaner, and safer.

Yeah, I’d see the vet too, there might be an issue (cats sometimes go outside their litter tray to let you know something’s wrong; mine used to do that and it was a urinary infection).

Female cats don't have any discharge when they're in heat. Give your vet a ring and they'll be able to advise you.
