Putting multiple cats in one carrier

Hi everyone, I’m posting here as I have a bit of a question.

I’m moving house in about a month’s time and I’ve got three cats. I already have a standard carrier that I’ll use for one of them, but I’m now wondering what to do about the other two.

I’m going to have to buy some more equipment. My question is: would it be possible to buy an XL crate (the kind made for dogs, for example) and put the other two cats in there together for the journey?

The two of them get on famously; I wouldn’t even be asking if they didn't, but I’m wondering whether it’s actually a good idea to have two cats in the same carrier during a trip?

Or is it one of those things that is strongly advised against, and I should really just buy two more carriers so that all three are separate?

Thanks in advance for any advice you can give; I just want to do what’s best for them.

Hi everyone! I’ve found a double pet buggy for two (cats or small dogs) with separate carriers. It really helps take the weight off and the bags are detachable too:

    Hi,

I agree with @Blue Cat and @Ulalie—for such a long journey, it's best to have one cat per carrier for their own peace and comfort.

You can find second-hand carriers quite cheaply on sites like Gumtree or Facebook Marketplace.

If the cats get on well, you can put them in the same carrier. Rescues don't have much of a choice as they're short of carriers and transport.

    Van hire.

Hi everyone, thank you so much for all your replies!

Right then, you're spot on—I'm going to get one carrier per cat, that'll be for the best.

Thanks a million for the advice! ✌

    Hi everyone,

For a journey that long, I’d also recommend having one carrier per cat. Above all, be extremely careful if you open the carriers during the trip—when the car is stationary, of course—to make sure all the windows are up. A cat can panic and bolt in a split second. Never let a cat loose while the car is moving, as they could get under the pedals.

Five hours is a long time for a cat, so I’d definitely recommend a carrier each. It’s much more practical, and if you need to move them, you’ll find that two carriers are far easier to manage than one large one that’s heavy enough when it’s empty, let alone full! I have size 2 carriers for each of my cats, which are already quite big, and I can tell you my ‘strong’ arms really feel the strain even when I’m only carrying one of them.

It all depends on the length of the journey. If it’s a short trip, it’s not an issue, but if it’s a long one, I’d definitely go for separate carriers so they’re more comfortable. Plus, they’ll always come in handy for holidays and things like that.

It’s a 5-hour journey, what do you reckon?

And if I get a large one for both of them, I’d obviously make sure it’s big enough so they have their own space – I mean, so they aren't treading on each other.
