Probiotics and Smecta?

Hi again everyone!!!

So, I’ve read on various sites and forums that you can give probiotics (like Ultra-levure) to a kitten with soft stools? I’d really like to know if I can or not?

Personally, I can see both sides... On the one hand, it’s a natural product and isn't dangerous. On the other hand, it’s technically intended for humans...

I’ve also heard that you can give them Smecta... Since it’s basically a natural product and made for babies... Some people have mentioned how effective these products are, but I’m still a bit sceptical...

Thanks

Let me rephrase my question: Should I stop giving them wet food, considering they need to stay hydrated?

Or maybe just in small amounts?

    Thanks for your help!!

Lol, I can just imagine the chemist's face :-) Well, let's just say my cat weighs about 3.3 lbs.

I don't think there are different types. But for example, for my dog (who's about 57 lbs, so around 4 stone), it’s 2 capsules morning, noon, and night. I reckon it mostly depends on weight, so for a cat... You’ll need to ask her how many capsules and how many times a day, but she’ll normally let you know ;) The difference with things like Smecta is that, while it definitely stops the diarrhoea, it doesn’t help restore the gut flora, which is why I prefer using probiotics. I pay about £4 for a pack. Funny story, actually – my pharmacist asked me "is it for an adult or a child?" and I felt so embarrassed saying "no, it's for my dog..." She burst out laughing and said, "Well, that’s a first! I haven’t heard that one before!" x)

My vet suggested mixing a bit of tummy settler with some water in a syringe and giving it to him bit by bit!

You can get them in capsule form from the chemist; you can just mix them into their wet or dry food or whatever. Ask the pharmacist for advice on the dosage.

Where do you put the yeast powder to get them to eat it?

Well, I mean, when I talk about stopping the wet food, it’s only until their stools are back to normal ^^
