My long-haired kitten smells of urine

Hi everyone,

I have a long-haired kitten. He has so much fur around his back end that I think his wee is getting caught in his coat. Because of that, he often smells of pee.. I’ve tried dry shampoo, and later on, wet shampoo. But the smell comes back every time he uses the litter tray.

Does anyone know if there are any special pet wipes? Or is it just because he hasn’t been neutered yet that it smells so strong? (He’s getting neutered in February)

Hi everyone, thanks for getting back to me. I’ve definitely been keeping a close eye on that area since the op. Do you think it could be something to do with the litter as well? Maybe I’m putting too much in, or not enough? Or could he be crouching right down in it and getting his bits wet with wee? Hope you all have a lovely day. Melanie

    Hi there,

It’s possible he isn’t quite ‘finishing’ his wee before hopping out of the litter tray, so a few drops are getting left on his fur. This early exit might be down to his op, which could be causing a bit of a strange or unusual sensation in that area. However, I reckon you’ve probably just started noticing it more because he’s only just had surgery. (What you’re describing doesn't really sound like incontinence.)

Hi Léa, Thanks for your reply and your help. We got him a large litter tray right from the start as it’s possible he’s going to be quite a big boy 😊 I've also been keeping an eye on him while he's peeing and nothing seems out of the ordinary to me. He goes about 3 times during the day and once during the night. Could you tell me a bit more about the signs of incontinence? I haven't noticed his nap spots being wet, and his legs aren't wet when he wakes up or while he's playing... it’s just that his groin area has a few drops of urine on it after he’s been. Regarding the soft stools, he’s had treatment for giardia and he’s currently on Royal Canin Gastrointestinal dry food, as recommended by our vet. If things don’t improve within 10 days, we’ll get a stool sample analysed. If you have any advice regarding dry food, I’d love to hear it 🤗 Thanks again. Mélanie

    Hi there,

Regarding the fur getting soaked in urine after using the litter tray, have you had a chance to watch your cat while they're doing their business? It could be that the size or style of the tray doesn't quite suit them; you might want to try a larger one to see if that helps resolve the issue. Keep a close eye on them to make sure they aren't struggling to pee or showing any signs of incontinence. While neutering can certainly help reduce the smell of the urine, the main goal should be to stop them from getting wet in the first place. Over time, urine can cause skin inflammation, often referred to as urine scald. Trimming the fur in that area could be a very practical solution.

As for the loose stools, I’d recommend checking in with your vet. It could point to an underlying digestive issue that needs investigating, such as an unsuitable diet, parasites, or an imbalance in their gut health.

    Have a lovely day,

    Best regards,

    Léa

    Hi everyone 😊

I hope you're all doing well?!

    I'm new here!

I’m posting because of what I’m currently going through with my kitten, who’s just been neutered.

Ever since he was snipped, because I’ve been constantly checking his bits to make sure they aren’t getting infected, I’ve noticed that his groin is often wet after he's had a wee, and sometimes the fur between his legs is too.

His fur hasn't all grown back yet as he was shaved for the op.

I was wondering if any of you had noticed this with your cats? I dread to think what it'll be like once all his fur has grown back in.

I hadn't noticed anything before he was neutered, but then again, I wasn't really paying attention to it back then.

But I’m wondering if this is normal or if it could be linked to the neutering?

I should mention that he’s long-haired and often gets bits of poo stuck to his bum.

Especially since he always has soft stools and we can't seem to find out what's causing the problem.

Thanks ever so much in advance for your help 😊

    Have a lovely day.

    Melanie

Poo used to get stuck around Chatouille’s bum quite a lot, so we trim the fur to stop it from getting caught in there. It’s always an option.

Hi, If his urine smells really strong, the other option is to get him neutered... wipes are a good alternative but they don't fix the underlying cause. However, if he has long hair, don't hesitate to trim the fur around his bum – that's what I do with my Siberian cat. https://www.stephaniepetsitter.com/

My long-haired girl often gets a messy bum, so I’ve opted for a little trim to clear her bottom area ^^

    Hi there,

If he hasn't been neutered, it’s no surprise at all that his urine smells so strong, not to mention the risk of him spraying on vertical surfaces. The only real solution is to get him neutered.

Yes, you can find special wipes for cats' and dogs' bums online (Glandex wipes, for example). But nothing beats getting him neutered.
