My kitten's coat development :p

Hi everyone,

I have a little moggy kitten who is 3 months old today. If anyone knows a bit about this sort of thing, I’d love to know if it’s possible that he might end up with at least semi-long hair.

His dad is a purebred Birman, and his mum was a moggy cross, already mixed with Siamese and Birman.

I’ve always wanted a long-haired cat, but I just fell in love with Zephir. So, if there’s even a small chance he might have semi-long hair, it would be a real bonus ;)

Also, if you have any before and after photos of your cats (as kittens and then as adults), I think it would be lovely to see those too.

Thanks in advance

My kitten's coat development :p

In the photo where he is in his red bed, he was 2 months and a few days old; in the others, he is 3 months old today.

    Hi everyone,

I’ve reserved a kitten who is only 3 weeks old and I was wondering if you think they might end up having semi-long hair. The mum is short-haired but the dad is an Angora... thanks in advance for your replies.

Yeah, it’s true that long-haired cats like Persians are easy to spot right from their first few days. 🙂

You're right, there's a very good chance your kitty will end up with a semi-long coat, because Scarlet had really long fur as a kitten compared to yours... But wasn't semi-long what you were after anyway? 🙂 Yes, I'd definitely like semi-long. I just meant that looking at Scarlett, it's clear you can tell how long their fur is going to be from a very early age :)

It’s actually very likely that your kitty’s coat will end up being semi-longhaired, as Scarlet had much longer fur when she was a kitten compared to yours... But wasn't semi-long what you were hoping for anyway? 🙂

Yeah, long, thick coats look lovely, but when you're finding fur in your dinner, I must admit it’s a bit of a struggle! 😁

But even with shorter fur, yours is a real beauty. And at least your house won't be completely overrun with hair! xD

He's adorable! I'm not really sure; since he's a crossbreed, it seems a bit tricky to tell if he'll end up being semi-longhaired or not... Birman kittens tend to have a thicker coat, and their fur looks a bit longer than your little one's, I think. Only time will tell!

As for the photos, here's Scarlett when she was a kitten:

    And Scarlett now:

You can still see that she had a fair bit of length even as a kitten, but it really filled out later on!

Scarlett has completely dashed my hopes ^^ her fur was already really long when she was tiny. It's my dream to have a cat blessed with such a coat, even if the grooming must be no mean feat!

Haha, don’t be in too much of a hurry, they grow up so fast! Exactly, since he’s part Birman it’s possible his coat will keep growing, but then again it might just get thicker and stay semi-long like it is now :). Thanks for the kind words about my girl ♥

Hi there, your cat has a thick, semi-long coat, but it won't really get any longer now. It might get a bit thicker, though – it’s a bit of a lottery, it depends on all sorts of things, but only time will tell! :) Kiara at 2 months old with a thick, semi-long coat. Kiara now – her coat is still just as thick, if not thicker, and semi-long, but it's less obvious now she's grown. Her mum had long hair, but her dad didn't. Your little Kiara is absolutely gorgeous! Thanks for your input; basically, it’s a bit of a lottery! :) In one way, I can't wait for him to grow up to see what he’ll look like as an adult, but on the other hand, they’re just so cute at this age, lol.
